User fees: reasonable? and a suggestion by scott moore
http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/newsitems/2007/070522debate.html Is a good read (and a video) on a debate between Phil Boyer and Bob May of the airlines. It occurred to me after viewing the video that Mr. May is honestly stating what the airlines want, which is to make sure that any light jet taxi...

Questions about the FAA by IIHKTWIKNIWHPMOC
If you were to grade the FAA today 9/14/2006 what would you give it? Do you think the FAA should be privatized and self funding rather than a empire building tax whore? I give the FAA an overall grade of D 1. Technology Innovation F 2. Air Safety oversight D

Jeppesen FliteStar/FliteMap VFR JeppView and FliteDeck by [email protected]
Hi. Recently I bought the new Jeppesen FliteStar VFR but unfortunately it doesn't include Moving Map. It seems that they had Moving Map in FliteMap and they had FliteDeck separately from the JeppView package. They discontinued all that. I'm just VFR and plan to remain in this category, so, I don't...

12 horsepower per hour per gallon, equates to percent power by Doug
Rule of thumb. So if you are burning 10 gallons an hour in a 180 hp engine, you are developing (10x12) = 120 hp. 120/180 = .67, so that is 67% power. It's not exact but gets you close.

Extra Kollsman Altimeter Pointers by [email protected]
I have an old Square D Kollsman 3 pointer altimeter that I think it's about 50 or more years old and seems to be in working condition. The body is about 2 13/16 diameter. The label on the back says part no. 371K-05 The three altitude pointers give the usual altitude readout. The little Kollsman...

G530W by [email protected]
Using a Garmin G530W, how is vertical guidance provided on LNAV/VNAV and LNAV+V approaches? Is it the same as LPV approaches, i.e, the GPS drives the HSI/LOC glideslope? Or are there other means? I can't find it documented anywhere...

I love being instrument rated. :) by Dane Spearing
Out here in the Rocky Mountain states, those of us who are instrument rated rarely get a chance to practice our skills in real IMC since "real IMC" usually implies either thunderstorms (summer) or severe icing condiditions and blowing snow (winter). However, today I was given a real treat by the...

WxWorx by Wyatt Emmerich
After struggling with my EchoFlight Orbcom datalink, I gave up. Forty minute nexrad data, when it worked at all, didn't help me much. Lo and behold, they now have a Wxworx interface, which I just installed today. Within two minutes I have all the weather data in the entire U.S. in high-res...

Clarification of the KMTV GPS-30/LOC-30 Approaches?? by Icebound
A couple of clarifications, please, for the IFR-challenged... 1. Is there a good reason for the holding point for the GPS approach to 30, to be back 11.8 miles back from the holding point for the LOC approach? They have established UBWAY right at the marker, so why do they not let the GPS...
