Temporarily deviating from IFR by
Mxsmanic
You're flying happily over the desert in your small plane, in bright, clear
weather, on your IFR flight plan. You notice a plume of smoke a short
distance away at your nine o'clock, and looking more carefully, you see what
looks like a stranded car with some people standing around it. You'd like...

Autopilot use during approach by
kevmor
I'm curious, why don't they let you use it with the landing lights?
If your POH supplement for the autopilot has operating limitations, it
isn't legal to use contrary to those limitations. Mine doesn't allow
use of the autopilot with the landing lights on, for example. You won't
find...

Unclear Clearance by
Travis Marlatte
This didn't cause any problems other than some additional radio traffic but
it caught me off guard. Let me know what you think...
I flew PWK (just north of O'Hare) to D95 (Lapeer just east of Flint,
Michigan). Went VFR across the lake but then encountered reduced vis and
lowering ceilings so I...

New CFII by
Steven Barnes
Just bragging. I passed my CFII checkride today. That should be the last one
for a good long while.
Had to do a DME Arc. Ugh. I haven't done one of those since... well *my* IFR
checkride. :-)
Time for bed...

Radar coverage in Canada by
BobKK47
My understanding is that radar coverage in western Canada is fairly
sparse, but what about at the higher altitudes, say FL 220 and
above. Thanks for any information.

King autopilot and GPS approaches by
Viperdoc[_4_]
I went and did some LNAV/VNAV approaches yesterday with a King KFC 200
autopilot. Looking for some tips with these autopilots on GPS approaches.
1. In NAV or APP mode the commanded rate of turn appears slower than in
HEADING mode. Spinning the HSI to the desired heading (often 90 degree...

Winds on approach by
kevmor
I flew yesterday and did some practice approaches, and the winds were
about 20 knots gusting to 26-28. I've flown almost all approaches so
far in a different 172 that had a 180hp conversion. Because of the
winds, I kept almost full cruising power on the descents to try and
maintain my normal 90...

Dreaming STARS by
[email protected]
Was I dreaming? Or did I once hear that RNP 1 and 2 stars/sids had
been published in the USA? I see type A and B, but these are RNAV,
and so must have no RNP requirement whatsoever, and can be flown by
any /G aircraft. Anyone provide some info?

8710 for CFII by
Steven Barnes
I hate to admit it, but I'm not sure which boxes to check on the 8710 for my
upcoming CFII checkride. *My* CFI is away for a couple days & I just wanted
to get the IACRA app filled out ahead of time.
For the initial ride, I checked Airplane Single Engine, Flight Instructor &
"Initial". Would this...

Light single into KBOS, KPVD, or KIAD? by
xyzzy
Looks like this Friday I may be picking up a family member on the way
to KHYA. I'll be leaving from KTTA in NC and we're trying to decide
which airport would be better to pick up a pax at in a C172. The
choices are KBOS, KPVD, or KIAD (she's in Syracuse and will have to
fly commercial to one of...

mystery of the colored flashing lights by
[email protected]
Sorry for being a little off topic, but I think you will see why this
group is a good one for this post.
On Feb 18, 2007, I visited a pilot who lives in the Oakland, CA hills
about 5 nm north of KOAK. He related a story of having seen
multicolored flashing lights in the air at night in the...

How do controllers coordinate clearances through sectors? by
Robert M. Gary
I'm curious, how does one controller secure a direct clearance through
mulitple other controllers' areas? Sometimes it seems that after a
handoff the receiving controller doesn't know what your clearance is
(but certainly must have that area available for you).
As a typical example, I was flying...

The nail in the coffin: TIS and Mode-S by
scott moore
Mode-S/TIS transponders cost more, turns out, they cost
substantially more to certify for IFR as well. I'm beginning to come
around to the viewpoint of those here who say that any modernization
that comes from the FAA will usually be a costly waste of time. The
FAA is abandoning TIS slowly, and...

Altimeter off by
kevmor
How can you adjust an altimeter if the pressure isn't correct in the
window for the altitude? I started talking to my examiner about it on
the checkride and he said that a lot of people adjust it themselves
(not an avionics shop, etc), and he said you take the front off (I
think) and theres a...
