Raids on Saipan late 1944 by
Gernot Hassenpflug
note: I posted this to sci.military.naval, and then realized it might
have more to do with rec.aviation.military!
I hope I will get a chance to complete the translation of part of an
interesting article over the weekend, here is the gist. I wonder if
anyone knows where to get good refs for the...

Meting with a Lancaster rear gunner by
Dave Eadsforth
Greetings all,
I was lucky enough to meet an ex-RAF rear gunner last week. Couldn't
chat for long, but he shared a few memories with me, so I thought I'd
pass them on.
I suppose he was either lucky or skilled. He was a rear gunner between
1940 and 1946, first Wellingtons, then Lancs, and...

Which cockpit has the best visibility? by
John Mullen

From looking at the *pictures*, I always thought the F-16 gave the pilot

aircraft is generally considered to give the pilot the best all around

Belly Landing by
Emilio
Take a look at this 737 belly landing video clips.
http://radioscanning.wox.org/Scanner/Sounds/video/737gear.mpeg
On a first sequence it appears the pilot is trying to get the gear unjammed
by bouncing the aircraft on the good landing gear. The second sequence
shows the actual landing. But I am...

Stupid question about flight testing and "the envelope" by
Scott Ferrin
In this month's "Combat Aircraft" there is an article on the F-22 and
in it one of the people invloved in flight testing says "Flying at the
edge of the envelope pushes this aircraft harder than any operational
F/A-22 will ever be pushed." Is that hyperbole? There are instances
in the past where...

On this day in 1944.. by
ArtKramr
On this day in 1944 the Germans began shelling theWirtz-Bastogne crossroad in
an attempt to push the 101st Airborne out of the defense of Bastogne. They
failed. .Temperature went down to below freezing in the bitter cold of that
Belgian winter and the 101st was down to eating K rations. Those...

[OT] Where to post? by
John Penta
Yes, I know it's bad to START a thread off-topic, but I have no idea
how else to ask.
OK, in my quest to look for bibliographies so I can do research for
school, I figured I'd look on USENET.
Unfortunately, I have no idea where to begin looking. Side-factor is
that I only know English; Not even...

Dynamic stalling of delta wing a/c (wrt MiG 21) by
drake
Hello,
I was reading on the net that the MiG-21 is a high demand no-nonsense
a/c, and tends to lose control (without the warning buffets as
experienced bu other a/c)
quite easily (during high speed turns??). Is this a MiG-21 phenom, or
do other Delta wing aircraft also have such inhernt control...

Why Are Gasoline-Like Fuels Favored For Aircraft? by
CHANGE username to westes
Since taking up aviation as a hobby, I have wondered why gasoline, and
similar oil-derived liquid fuels, have become the defacto standard for all
forms of general aviation and commercial and military aircraft. Comparing
Jet fuel to something like natural gas, Jet fuel is four times as...

From the online Los Angeles Times, Oct. 8, 2003:
"The Air Force also is considering putting new engines on the B-1 to
double the speed of what is already one of the fastest bombers in the
world."
The link to the whole story follows, but the above sentence is all they
