Secrets to the FAA certificate by Robert M. Gary
I was at the jewelry store today and noticed that when they put my CA DL under this machine, there were secret little bears printed on it. On my CC there was a secret M and C on it. So I pulled out my FAA certificate and put it under the light. It said something like "Safety of Flight, FAA" and had...

report a near-collision to FBO owner? by gatt
While preflighting the Arrow yesterday afternoon I watched a C172 pull up through the tiedown T right next to me. Not sure why he didn't stop right at the chains. Instead, he pulled ahead and stopped. As he was beginning to push the airplane back, the other FBO C172 darted in from behind and...

FAA ambiguity by Richard Russell
Begin rant mode..... There is a thread in the IFR newsgroup regarding pattern entry that currently has over 50 posts and offers many differing opinions on the subject. Many of these disparate positions have merit. This rant is not about pattern entry or the expected personality clashes or...

A collage of images of Charles Lindbergh's resting place. by ThomasH
Last year (or rather "2 year ago," we have 2005 already!) we spend some time on Maui and we visited Kipahulu, the place which Charles Lindbergh have chosen to be put to rest. http://www.pbase.com/goislands/2003_08_30_kipahulu I hope that you will like the images. The plateau is of stunning...

The Aviator by Rosspilot
I went to see it yesterday. I thought it was actually pretty good, and thought DeCaprio pulled off a believable Hughes. The flying sequences seemed a little hokey, and the crash scenes were typical Hollywood crap, but for 3 hours, it goes by quickly.

Moving to Canada -- Converting License by Jay Somerset
Does anyone have a reference to the requirements to obtain a Canadian pilot license if one already holds a US one? I have checked the COPA web page, but can't seem to find anything on this topic. Thanks.

Hi guys, can anyone tell me what is required to obtain a clearance from Essendon Tower to do an orbit around the Melbourne CBD. I trained in the bush for my recent PPL, but I fly mostly from Moorabbin. What do I need to request and do I need to have submitted a flight plan. Thanks Paul -- paulsims

My first freezing rain encounter by [email protected]
The weather was perfect for flying yesterday morning, sunny, mostly blue sky with about 12000' ceiling and little wind (unlike the day before when we canceled our flying plan due to 13G24 wind). As usual, we checked weather sites, TAF/weather map etc before heading to the airport. Bad weather is...

24M of Cocaine in a crashed plane by Jim Fisher
I don't normally post crash stories but this one seemed just too bizarre to not post here. From http://www.sltrib.com/nationworld/ci_2492440 (but I first saw it in my little local Alabama newspaper) "WHEELING, W.Va. - Authorities called to the scene of a weekend plane crash found no people - dead...

Book Review: "Dirty Dealing: Drug Smuggling on the Mexican Border",et al; Cartwright by Paul
An enjoyable read and almost fair to the real John Wood Judge John Wood, whom my father and uncle, both now deceased trial lawyers, both had cases in front of, was one of the worst judges who ever walked the earth. He was a ruthless hack who enjoyed dealing in other people's misery. Wood's vicious...

Anti-collision mechanism by Ramapriya
Does this get activated only when there's an aircraft in the dangerous vicinity or will it also trigger if the aircraft is hurtling towards some terrain such as a hill? And does every aircraft have this system these days, regardless of size? Ramapriya

Who says we wouldn't know what to do in the new frontier? The X Prize was just the beginning. Thanks to Mojave Aerospace Ventures, spaceships are now part of the GA world. The BBC News reported on Monday that Virgin Galactic's fleet of five spaceships, to be built by Burt Rutan's Scaled...

Mexico Multientry by Robert M. Gary
I plan to go back to Mexico in Feburary. I know there have been a lot of false starts getting multientry's in Mexico. However, now it sounds like there may be real multi-entry permits. Does anyone know what I need to do to get this? What is the cost vs. one time entry? Thanks! -Robert

Bob, in your book "The Complete Advanced Pilot" - Third Edition, in the section on turbine engines on page 13-6 you state: "The control quadrant will have three sets of knobs, like any other twin, but one set will be called 'condition levers'. The throttle and mixture controls perform their usual...
