L-19 Birddog Avionics Parts - For Sale? by ContestID67
I am a member of a glider club that uses an L-19 Birddog for our tow plane. The airplane makes a great towplane and by removing the rear stick and turning the rear seat around, you can face backwards for the flight which is a real hoot. The airplane came to us after military use and had a full...

Heard on the air by Roy Smith
We had just taken off VFR from HPN when a snow squall blew in. We hadn't even reached pattern altitude when we decided discretion was the better part of valor. We came right back and landed. On the taxi back, I heard ground say to somebody, "The field is now IFR, visibility 2-1/2 miles in...

Ground effect effectiveness by Tony
I haven't found a decent reference for this -- can anyone help? Consider a clean low speed airplane -- maybe one of the kit built ones. Does anyone have some quantitative measure of how much drag is reduced if the airplane is flown say half or quarter of a wingspan above the ocean? Would we be...

Question
P39 elevator & aileron construction? by Chris Wells
I recently visited the Niagara Aerospace Museum (thumbs up!) and got the opportunity to see a P39 Airacobra close-up...and I noticed that the elevator and ailerons (& possibly the rudder as well) were fabric-covered, instead of aluminum like the rest of the plane. Is this the way they were built?

Watched the shuttle land today. by Roy Smith
I watched the whole thing (from about 1/2 hour out) on the NASA video feed (http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html). It is really is amazing how all this stuff works. One amazing thing about the final approach is how steep it is. I've always known it was steep (the NASA web...

Airbus A380 in Arizona by User
Spotted on Interstate 10 about 75 miles east of Tucscon, Arizona, on the afternoon of 11/17: A large convoy of trucks guiding an oversized load. The oversized load appeared to be a fuselage section about 75 feet long, and significantly larger in diameter than a 747. And the whole package was...
