Practicing my scan by Paul Tomblin
When I don't fly IFR for a period of time, I don't seem to have any problem with approaches or procedures or the usual stuff, but my scan goes to hell. After looking over at the GPS or down at the chart and finding myself in a 40 degree bank, I tend to turn on the autopilot and leave it on until...

Departure Procedure jStumper Question by [email protected]
Take a look at Salmon Idaho KSMN, Ahehu 1 RNAV Dept (Obstacle). I realize few aircraft are equipped to fly this, however; 1. Notice the "at 200 kt" requirement for some waypoints. Is this TAS, GS, or IAS? And a reference please if you know of one. 2. Why is the stipulation "at" instead of...

Does glide ratio change with altitude? by Jim Carter[_1_]
During a recent discussion about calculating glide ratio, I began to wonder what the effects of pressure altitude were on the glide ratio of an aircraft. Since air is 50% as dense at FL180 as at sea level, would the glide ratio increase (glide further) as altitude decreases? AND if there is a...

430W/When does the glideslope register by scott moore
Keep in mind I tried out my new 430W install for the first time today. I tried a few sample approaches, really outstanding. The 430W makes you want to try full (not vectored) approaches because it essentially automates everything. It will hold on the approach hold, start the approach on its own...

GNS430W: Parallel offset course feature by Peter R.
Just picked up my aircraft with the GNS430W upgrade and was reading the manual to see what new features are now included. In there I discovered the feature that allows the pilot to purposely fly a parallel offset course anywhere from 1 to 99 miles. The only tedious characteristic of this...

Holding Pattern Question by Dennis Johnson
I'm probably over-thinking holding patterns and have become confused. When given instructions to hold at a non-published holding pattern, ATC will specify: 1. The direction from the fix, such as north, north-east, etc. 2. The name of the holding fix. 3. The radial, course, or airway on which...

1. Are glide-slop informations of LPV & LNAV/VNAV in 496's database? 2. If yes, can VNAV indicators on 496's HSI display this glide-slop when flying approaches? Thanks, Robin

Radio Call Entering Holding by Dennis Johnson
With help from the people on this newsgroup, I'm happy to announce that I passed my IPC! One thing that came up on my flight was that I didn't announce that I was entering holding and my altitude. The 2006 AIM 5-3-3 a. 1. (f) requires reporting to ATC, whether in radar contact or not, "The...

How to tell when approach plate updated? by kevmor
If an approach plate comes out, then it's NOTAM'ed for some changes, I make the changes to it. But then the next few cycles, those changes aren't implemented yet and are still NOTAM'ed. Instead of making the changes to each cycle again, can you tell by the Amendment # if it's been updated?

Flying to Pittsburgh by Paul Tomblin
I'm going down to visit my daughter at Pitt this weekend. I've flown there once before, landing at Allegheny County (KAGC). I have a couple of questions: - Last time, on departure, they gave me a full route clearance including an intersection that was hard to find on my L-chart. I think it...

Loggable? by Paul Tomblin
Flying to an unfamiliar airport, in very hazy conditions, I was cleared for the visual for 28 not too long before sunset. I could see the ground below me at 6,000 feet, but I couldn't see a damn thing in front of me because of the sun in my eyes and the haze, so I asked for and was given the ILS...
