Whatever happened to Thunderhead hood ? by
Sanjay Kumar
I was reading the review of various hoods in Consumer Aviation
(January 1999 - yeah thats 5 years ago !). They recommended
Thunderhead and Best Hood among non-foggle solutions (I don't
like foggles because whatever is wrong with me any eyeglass-wear
just fogs up quickly). I have ordered Best Hood...

Strange and/or really difficult approaches by
SeeAndAvoid
Howdy all,
Got into a discussion of the strangest and/or most difficult instrument
approach procedures with some friends recently. One guy used the
GUC ILS RWY6 as an example (rules: you do NOT have GPS, are /A direct HBU
from the NE, and CANNOT be vectored to the LOC due to radar coverage,...

Standard Instrument Procedures...published in text form? by
Mark Astley
All,
I was once told that instrument procedures (i.e. approaches) are published
in text form, and then rendered into NOS charts (and a similar process for
Jeppesen).
1) Is this true?
2) If so, is this "raw" data available to the public somewhere? I'm looking
for something similar to the ATA-100...

Insurance by
Jeff Bucchino
As I'm winding down my IFR lessons and will also be renewing my renter's
insurance policy in a few months, should my premium be lower? Do you folks
get a break by having an additional rating?

IR written Primary/Secondary instrument questions by
Jeremy
I'm studying for my written and having an awful time with the
questions dealing with primary/secondary instruments for
pitch/bank/power during various phases of flight. The distinctions
appear to be senseless hair splitting, and I'm getting them mostly
wrong in the practice tests. Some of this is...

Plz Help: need lat/lon of navaid "AC" at airport LFKJ (france) by
Ian
Hi--
I'm trying to find the lat/lon of two points, actually.
For airport ICAO code LFKJ (Ajaccio, France), I am looking for:
1. lat/long of navaid AC (ILS/DME of hdg 025 @110.3)
2. lat/long of threshold (touchdown box) of runway 20
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Back in the Saddle Again by
Jerry Kaidor
Hi folks,
Getting back into that instrument training.... ...after a haitus of
over a year. It's been something like three years since I started
trying to get it.
Was doing pretty good until:
1-punch: My airplane got a bit of airframe corrosion, requiring
three months of layoff while repairs...

Pass my Instrument Checkride Today! by
Judah
Hey Guys!
Just thought I'd pass on the good news. I passed my IFR Practical Test
today. It was quite a ride - I was much more nervous than I thought I would
be, and frankly it showed in my flying. But I did OK (not great - I should
have done better) - and earned the rating!
Definitely a worthwhile...

TIM'S ABCS by
epsalant
Once upon a time I used the pneumonic TIM'S ABCS to set up for an
approach. I have forgotten what everything stands for (I believe it
begins Tune, Identify, Markers...).
Does anyone remember the rest? And do you know what book it's from?
Thanks!
Evan

Interesting Departure Procedu MRB Trixy Two by
Richard Kaplan
I came across an interesting IFR Departure Procedure recently during some
training and I wonder if anyone has flown it before and/or if anyone else
has any comments.
For those who are AOPA members, here is a link to the MRB (Martinsburg WV)

Direct To a waypoint in flightplan on Garmin 430 by
Andrew Gideon
On the Bendex/King gear on which I learned, it was easy to skip to another
way point on the flight plan. And this was very convenient, as it comes up
fairly often when IFR, at least for me. For example, I'll very often be
told "direct SBJ" when leaving CDW, only get "direct ..." to the...

What is out there?

Flight service remotes by
Everett M. Greene
Flight service has a remote radio site somewhere in our area.
When contacting them via the remote, the specialists want you
to state you're calling on that frequency. If you don't, they
seemingly have the remote transmitter off and you won't hear
their reply. If you call them again without the...

that graphically displays the VORs that are used to describe to
borders of areas described in airmets. Does anyone know the URL of
this website?
Thanks

Victor Airways in Clearance by
Wyatt Emmerich
I fly with a Garmin 530. Great box, but I cannot for the life of me
understand why they would fail to include Victor Airways. Anyway, I often
get a clearance such as 210BA cleared to Yodoo, Clear City, Victor 245,
Bogur.
Now if I program the Garmin 530 for Yodoo, Clear City, Bogur, 19 times our
of...

TIS in San Jose out of service ? by
Scott Moore
Anyone know what is going in with San Jose Radar TIS ?
As usual, Norcal approach knows nothing about it.
It was dead all day today, and I have not flown for
a while, so who knows.
Thanks in advance.

Where is approach good about multiple approaches and clearances in the air? by
Andrew Gideon
I'm no freight dog or corporate pilot with dozens of approaches to minimums
each day. For me, as with many GA pilots I expect, maintaining *real*
currency involves explicit practice.
That's fine; I enjoy it. But I'd like to try some new places.
The issue is that I'd like to try some new places...

Non-radar transponder codes by
Michael
I am planning a trip into the Caribbean. My question is: If I have
been given a clearance from a non-radar facility. Because the
facility does not have radar they do not give me a transponder code.
What should I squawk? The same question applies to coming into a
radar-controlled environment from...

Complete Reversal or Not? by
Greg Esres
Can anyone suggest any reasons why you shouldn't use GPS or DME to
lead your turns when approaching a fix, such as an IAF, on a non-GPS
approach? (Meaning that you don't wait for complete reversal of the
nav instrument.)
The AIM has a couple of requirements for a "complete reversal" of...
