Jiggery-Tackery by
Michael Horowitz
I'm practicing making joints.
I built a simple jig to hold two pieces of tubing parallel and about
6" apart and have notched and placed a third piece of tubing,
connecting the two parallel pieces at 60*
To minimize warpage from the heat (I'm using gas) I know I should tack
one side of the joint,...

I have posted a large archive to alt.binaries.pictures.aviation with
scans of 12 photos taken of a sectioned pobjoy niagra 90hp engine.
this is an engine worthy of a model engineering reproduction or even a
homebuilt engine in full size for homebuilt aircraft.

Welding question #2; rust holes by
Michael Horowitz
AC 43.13 para 4-94 says: " WELDED-PATCH REPAIR. Dents
or holes in tubing may be repaired by using a patch of the same
material, one gauge thicker" and then defines punctured tubing:
b. Punctured Tubing. Holes are not longer than tube diameter and
involve not more than 1/4 of tube...

Welding question #1 by
mhorowit
I'm at my welding table practicing welding with a new torch, and I've
found myself burning thru the metal. I've been correcting the error
by filling in the metal with filler and continuing with the exercise.
Can I do the same to correct a "run away hole" on real work? - Mike

AN ENGINE FOR HOMEBUILDERS by
Bob
As of 2009 Amateur aircraft builders are largely limited to various
Volkswagen conversions. While such conversions may be as large as
140cid (2332cc) when using a Type I crankcase -- and up to 170cid
(2884cc) if you begin with the heavier Type IV -- the SUSTAINABLE
output of these engines is...

Bamboo Propellers by
Bob
In a related post I asked if anyone had heard of such a thing. So far
the only response indicates a misunderstanding of how bamboo is used
for such things.
In the tropics -- with Vietnam being a fair example -- bamboo often
has a diameter of several inches. When split AND STEAMED you're...

Water-cooled Examples by
Veeduber[_2_]
To All,
In another thread regarding the growing shortage of air-cooled
automobile engine that can be easily converted to serve as a power-
plant for a home-built, I mentioned liquid-cooled engines as an
alternative. This lead to an interesting exchange about various
options but it also made clear...

Honey, Your jig's on fire! by
wright1902glider
For the past few days, I've been working on a project that is semi-
related to aviation. That is, its related by the fact that the skills
necessary to complete it may also be usefull in building an aircraft.
I like to think of it as a training project.
What I'm building is a kinetic-sculpture...

Gluing rubber pieces by
[email protected]
Trying to repair the foot on the extension laddder I use
in the hangar.
It needs a new rubber foot.
I'm riviting a 1/4" piece or rubber to the aluminum foot.
Then I want to glue a 1/8" piece to the that to cover the
rivet heads.
So the glue joint would mostly be in compression and would

The Orphaned Engine, Part Two by

Having referred to an 'orphaned' engine shortly after being diagnosed
with an incurable form of cancer lead to a gross misunderstanding as
to the immediacy of my demise, with me being carried out the door, X's
for eyes with a wrench still clutched in my hand. Last June I was
diagnosed with...

Clarke sandblaster gun - moisture? by
Michael Horowitz
I came upon a Clarke sandblaster gun, filled it with abrasive, ran the
pressure up to 100 PSI and tried it out. this is a syphon type blaster
that looks a bit like a paint sprayer.
I know when spraying paint folks advise you to have something in the
line to dry the air. Is a dryer necessary if I'm...
