Dutch roll coordination technique by
Matthew Jurotich
There is a co-ordination exercise called Dutch Roll. The idea is to rapidly
roll the plane from zero to +nn degress to -nn degrees without stoping at
zero then back to zero while keeping the nose fixed at a point on the
horizon. When doing this correctly are the rudder and ailerons...

Best site for METARS, TAFs, Nexrad on a Treo by
Maule Driver
I just spent the weekend Web surfing for weather on my Treo.
Suprisingly, even ADDS works pretty well.
But my question - what's the best free site for picking up METARS, TAFs
and perhaps even Nexrad images on a Web enabled phone? Limited
bandwidth and limited screen size.

Garmin 396 TFR display coming and going by
Maule Driver
I flew into and out of 3W3 this weekend (to eat crabs). 3W3, Kentmorr
Airpark, is a grass strip underneath the Wash DC ADIZ that has a
specific procedure for ingress and egress.
Managing the procedure and airspace restrictions was easy with the 396
and my 300XL. Flying in from the north, I...

Sometimes we get good press - today at noon EDT by
Maule Driver
A local instructor here in Durham NC landed on an interstate after
engine problems. Somehow, Paul caught the crest of the local news
coverage and has been interviewed and quoted positively all week.
Today he is being interviewed on the local NPR station's "State of
Things" show. Will be...

Do you ever use standby on your transponder? by
Maule Driver
I don't. It stays on 24/7 (you know what I mean). 1200 unless given a
code. It effectively prevents "Maule, check your transponder" unless
using the wrong code.
I make no attempt to turn it off or go to standby while taxiing or
anything else. I've never been asked to go to standby or...

Peltor ANR Headset deepsixed by
Maule Driver
I'm at the end of my rope for these headsets. I bought them about 5
years ago and they worked pretty well. I particularly liked the
workmanship and the way they folded up. 9v battery in the ear cup was
nice too.
This it the second time I've sent one of the them in when the ANR
function just...

IFR vs. VFR along the east coast - a long pilot's log by
Maule Driver
We did a roundtrip this weekend from Durham NC to Saratoga Springs NY
and back. Went IFR on the way up and VFR on the way back.
Conditions on the way up were primarily VFR with convective storms.
Even though I filed a route to avoid the DC ADIZ, I was routed through
it in order to miss the...

Tangier Island - Chesapeake Bay by
Maule Driver
Well, we finally made it to Tangier Island. A great place to visit in a
plane - I'm not sure I'd want to take the ferry there unless I had some
real business out there.
It's just a dry spot in the middle of the estuary that's big enough for
a small town. I guess it's been inhabited since the...

I was trying to get home but got swarmed! by
Maule Driver
Lovely Lakeland Linder. The home of Sun & Fun was also the site for a
Sportair workshop last week. I left a couple of hours early in order to
beat the storms back to home in Durham NC.
The last thing you want to hear when you walk into an FBO is, "You
aren't the owner of the Maule are you? Oh...

EAA Screen Saver by

I have been happily using the monthly screen saver calendars that EAA put out. My problem is, where did I get them from? Where are they?
Anyone know? I've searched their site and can't find a link. Thanks in advance.

CRASH: Harrier down (video included) by
Maule Driver
Hope I can say this without an eruption but, "interesting film"
I was particularly fascinated by the way the ejection and parachute sequence
resulted in the pilot hitting the downed aircraft, despite the apparent
wind. Assuming the Harrier ejects straight up (I have no idea) it appears
that a...

AOPA Flight Planner - I preferred the earlier one by
Maule Driver
I preferred the earlier one because it was web based and allowed me to run
it wherever I was on whoever's system I was using (including my friend's
Macs where I've planned and filed dozens of flights).
What really is irritating me is the fact that my home 'port, 8NC8, is not in
the airport...

I knew this already but did it anyway by
Maule Driver
It's difficult to fly when you gotta take a leak. So always carry a relief device and use it when you have to.
It was only a 1:15 night flight over a well known route into a very familiar airport (14A) Forecast was for clear skies but we ran thru a beautiful line of flurries where visibility...

I removed myself from an airline flight - long by
Maule Driver
This happened in Houston years ago - maybe 6 or 7. Curious about what any airline people think of this.
I boarded a full flight in Houston for a flight to the NY area. We're about ready to go and can hear the cargo doors being closed below. I notice that there is some repeated closing going on...

"Last Samurai" and Bradley's book "Flyboys" by

I was recently dragged out to see the "Last Samurai". Can't
really recommend it except as escapist, fantasy violence...and Tom for the stargazers. But I can recommend a related book, James Bradley's "Flyboys, a true story of courage".
Related? The book starts with a sweeping historical look...

I'm a long time Palm user and finally broke down and got a Treo 600 phone. Using it's web access, or Palm apps, what weather or flight planning sites/tools can be recommended?
