Tips for new IFR pilot? by
Tlewis95
Hello
Does anyone have any tips for a new Instrument Pilot (me)
I did my first flight today (C77-UGN-C77) And about 45 minutes of it was in
IMC. It was kinda cool. My first appoach was missed due to a late (6mi) turn by
ATC but the next 2 were probably 6-8 out of 10. It was the ILS 23 ant...

Lost Comm route? by
[email protected]
I think this is a well worn question, but my digging isn't getting an
answer for my specific scenario(s).
Aircraft does NOT have a WAAS GPS. It could have an older IFR
certified (just not Sole Navigation) GPS.
1. File Airways/VORs (within 40/25 mile service radius). Upon
departure, request & get...

Where is MEPTE by
Jose
How can I find out where the FAA thinks MEPTE is? On the NOS IFR charts
it's charted as in the water (or over it), but when I fly it, it's over
land. I know the NOS charts are not all that accurate (for topography)
but I'd like to know where it is, for a certification flight for our GPS.
Any...

Extra Hold Depicted on Plate? by
Mitty
We are getting a brand new ILS 26 at KANE and I just downloaded the plate. The
miss is what I expected to see and is a hold at the GEP "Gopher" VOR a few miles
to the west. But there is also a hold depicted at the PNM NDB, which is a long
ways away. That hold is not mentioned on the plate.
I...

IFR checkride: passed by
[email protected]
About a year after I started the initial training I finally passed my
checkride last week. The cross country hours took me forever to build
up. I finished that off with a nice flight from Hawthorne, CA to
Oakland to see the Dodgers play across the bay.
The oral went perfectly, it was only about...

Aviation Charts for Puerto Vallarta by
Will
Where can I find approach and departure charts for rural airports
in the Sierra Madre mountains that surround Puerto Vallarta,
Mexico? I realize many of these mountain airports are little
more than a dirt road next to a farm and do not have published
instrument approaches, but I would still like...

MS flight simulator 2004 by
Matt Whiting
Santa delivered Flight Simulator and a Cyborg joystick this year. I
plan to use it to help maintain instrument currency when I don't have
time for the real thing. I'm finding the learning curve for FS to be a
little steep initially and it is taking a while to get things like the
joystick...

RNP .3 Without GPS by
[email protected]
Most RNAV approaches have the notations:
"GPS or RNP - 0.3 required", and
"DME/DME RNP - 0.3 not authorized"
1. The "or RNP .3" seems to imply some navigation unit other than gps
can have rnp .3 Any idea what?
2. If an FMS with rnp .3 is able to conduct this approach, wouldn't
it need a gps...

GA friendly airports near ELP & AUS by
ROBIN FLY
I am planning a flight from Los Angeles to New Orleans for some much needed R&R
during holidays. My wife does not like to fly more than two 4-hour legs a day,
so my plan is to fly from EMT to ELP for fuel & lunch than to AUS overnight.
Next morning we continue to NEW. For return trip, we will...

GA cockpit weather by

this, and came across WSI in flight. They appear to offer an uncertified
service for...

GPS approach question by
Matt Whiting
A few weeks ago I flew a practice GPS RWY 24 approach into ELM. I don't
recall the exact heading coming in, but it was in the sector leading to
CIMAN. I'm new to GPS approaches having just returned after several
years of inactivity, and still haven't got all the nuances figured out.
I expected...

First single pilot IFR by
Wizard of Draws
October 23, 2004 12:00 1.6 hrs. (1.0 actual)
First solo IFR, 2 approaches in actual!
A warm overcast day with a slight breeze. Everything was reporting broken
skies from 2200 up to 8000 where it was supposed to be overcast. A few
patches of blue sky here and there made the "occasional IFR along...

GPS/WAAS VNAV approaches and runway length by
Nathan Young
The Garmin 480 now supports LPV approaches which are ILS like
approaches using WAAS-GPS for both LNAV and VNAV.
My question. I'm assuming the LPV approach would target 1000ft down
the runway as the TDZ (just like an ILS). Does this mean that LPV
approaches will not be added to the airports with...

Holds for currency requirements by
Paul Tomblin
I recently did 6 approaches to get back current again, but I forgot to
do a hold. My last hold was less than 6 months ago, so I'm still legal
for a few more days. What counts as a hold to fit that vaguely worded
requirement?
- A self-assigned hold while flying solo VFR in VMC?
- A self-assigned...

Clearance: Direct to airport with /U by
Judah
The other day I was flying to 3N6 in NJ from JST in PA in a plane with two
VORs and a VFR-only GPS. About halfway through I got an ammended clearance
giving me a shortcut. The last point in the clearance was ARD then Direct
3N6.
After accepting the clearance, and turning toward the next waypoint,...

Jepp Charts - Subscription Only? by
Peter Gibbons
Went to my local pilot shop this week to pick up some new IFR charts,
and noticed a sign near the cash register that stated that Jepp charts
were now only available on a subscription basis through Jepp.
I've only ever used NOS charts, but had heard how good Jepp charts
were and was interested in...

Current Pilots and/or CFI's -- FAR/AIM by
JBoDEAN
Just curious.
What brand FAR/AIM do you prefer? I've been using ASA's and debating
on trying something new for the 2004 edition. I know Gleim, ASA, Jepp
all have their FAR/AIM.
The other CFI's I work with here use the Jepp (book version, not the
subscription).

Center vs. Approach Altitudes by
Joseph D. Farrell
Hello - I have been looking in the AIM and a few other places and am
trying to track down where enroute approach control end and Center
control altitudes begin. When planning arrivals and depatures through
NYC/DC/PHL and BOS airspace I was curious where those altitudes begin.
I've been told...

Fujitsu LT C-500 as EFB questions... by
greg
I'm looking for comments and suggestions specifically about using a
Fujitsu LT C-500 as a backup tool for approach plates using Jeppview
with Flightdeck.
Although I'll always be printing my plates, would it really be
possible to use this thing in a pinch?
Has anyone tried a USB GPS with one of...
