Approach Timer Frustration by
Andrew Sarangan
Over the years I have been using various digital timers, but so far I
have not been satisfied with any of them. The LCD displays make them
difficult to read when viewing at different angles. The right seat
pilot (or CFII) cannot see the digits. Lack of illumination in most
units is another big...

Approach Timing by
john smith
For those of you using handheld GPS's when you fly IFR:
Do you use the throttle to increase/decrease power to match the ground
speed to the approach speed table so the time is correct to the MAP?
Or,
Do you use the distance to the airport to determine/verify the MAP, even
though the time may not...

Approach to an LOM/IAF with PT (not vectors to final) by
O. Sami Saydjari
The Approach in question is SDF RWY 2 at KISW. I was coming in from the
south, nearly lined up with the inbound course of 021 degrees. I was in
touch with ATC. The LOM/IAF is called NEPCO. The ATC asked if I wanted
"direct NEPCO." I said yes. Within about 10 miles of the airport,...

Approaches and takeoff mins. by
jamin3508
Today I awoke to find a cloud sitting on the ground bringing the vis down
to 1/16th of a mile. All the airlines here in KROC were forced to hold
from takeoff until it lifted a little. I know that the part 91 is 0/0
unless otherwise noted, what about part 131 or the airlines? Do they...

Approved Flight Sim by
[email protected]
Hello,
My flight school (a very small flight school) is looking at getting a
Sim. Can any people recommend approved sims that are affordable and
easy to run/install?
They would just be using it for IFR training and multi training. Right
now the school has a 172, 150 and Seneca.
Any advice...

Are "Popups" A Hassle? by
skym
For the ATC guys: I frequently have departed VFR, but then do a popup
if needed. Frequently these are sortof foreseeable possibilities, but
often enough I have been able to proceed VFR all the way. I've often
wondered just how much of a hassle it is to ATC to have to deal with a
popup.

Are birds IFR? by
Kevin Clarke
Here's a whacky question.
I just flew my 250NM IFR x-ctry. The last leg was IMC, bouncing along at
5000'. So the question I have is, do birds ever fly in the clouds?
There are many birds at my home airport (KFIT). I got enough stuff to
worry about during an IAP, I'd hate to get a bird strike...

Are handheld GPSes becoming a defacto primary nav source? by
Paul Tomblin
This week I did several IFR flights, some in IMC and most in VMC. On a
couple of those flights, ATC offered me direct to the next VOR after the
one I was navigating to, well before I could actually pick up the signal.
One time departing Rochester, they told me to go direct Elmira when I was
less...

Are pilots really good or just lucky??? by
Icebound
When I read something like this:
http://www.tsb.gc.ca/en/reports/air/2003/A03A0022/A03A0022.asp
....I worry a lot.
We have a pilot with 110 successfully Atlantic crossings and 5000 hours,
taking a plane...IFR... 2000 miles across the North Atlantic into the
Canadian sub-Arctic in the dead of...

argh -- flight plan routes by
[email protected]
ventmode
I am an inexperienced instrument pilot and I just don't understand why
we file routes on our flight plans at all!
I never get what I filed, anyway, and it's not uncommon that the route
I actually get shares not a single waypoint with what I filed.
It is an interesting game to try to...

Argus 5000CE question by
Francois Marquis
Hello,
Has anyone have first hand experience with both the Argus 5000 and Argus
5000ce. I know a lot of users have transitioned to the CE, but
functionality-wise they are about the same. (minus the color, of course)
My biggest issue is that I sometime deplore the contrast of my 5000
unit,...

Arrow add-on for FS2004 by
Paul kgyy
Any recommendations on the best Piper Arrow add-on for MSFS2004? I
found a couple with google but the downloads don't seem to work.
Doesn't have to be freeware. Mostly what I want is a reasonably
accurate power model. I have ASA's On Top but the GPS is crummy and
the power model has no...

ASA On Top 9? by
Hamish Reid
I realise it's only been released for a few days, but as I'm in the
market for a non-MS sim, and as I have an older version that works just
fine but needs updating so it can do real GPS, etc., does anyone have
anything to say one way or another about ASA's new On Top 9?
Thanks,
Hamish

ASA On Top bug? by
Tim Bengtson
I have been having a problem with ASA On Top that has been driving me
nuts. A short drive, admittedly... Anyway, the compass dial around the
ADF doesn't adjust. That is, you can turn the knob, and the dial will
start to move, but it soon snaps back to its original location. Even
this would be...

ASA OnTop 8 Pedal Problem by

moves the sim plane way more than my input and just a little step on the =
pedals, the plane would immediately yaw and then roll the plane into a =
40 - 50 degree blank angle.=20
Anybody knows how to adjust the input level of...

Aspen at night by
Ron Garret
All the approach plates for Aspen are marked "Procedure not authorized
at night" (presumably a result of the G4 crash a few years back). And
yet there are commercial flights scheduled to land as Aspen at night.
How do they do it?

Aspen Avionics by

I was intrigued at Oshkosh with Aspen Avionics gyro and hsi steam gauge
replacements. They have a LCD solid-state ADHRS gyro and HSI that fits into
the same slots as the steam gauges. Anybody have any experience with these
instruments? Are they shipping yet? I assume they are using these new...

Aspen EFD1000 by
[email protected]
I got the information from Aspen Avioncs that the ARINC429 interface
of the KLN900 cannot be used by the EFD1000. Does anyone has an idea
why? is it a technical problem or a certification problem? EFD1000 can
use the Garmin ARINC.
The EFD1000 has an internal AHRS which provides attitude +...
