The CBO is proposing to kill GPS IIIB and IIIC by
macpacheco
http://www.gpsworld.com/defense/news/congressional-budget-office-issues-report-gps-defense-12261
Sad, sad possibility, the congressional budget office is proposing
killing GPS IIIB/C, arguing the new features aren't essential for
military purposes.
Given the certain budget crunch coming, studies...

Loggable? by
Paul Tomblin
Flying to an unfamiliar airport, in very hazy conditions, I was cleared
for the visual for 28 not too long before sunset. I could see the
ground below me at 6,000 feet, but I couldn't see a damn thing in front
of me because of the sun in my eyes and the haze, so I asked for and was
given the ILS...

GDL69A or GPS 496? by
Jay Maynard
I flew with my boss for steak at Harris Ranch last night in his A36. On the
way, we got to talking about GPS systems. He's got a Garmin 396, and was
telling me that it (and the 496) would talk to the GNS430W the same way as
the GDL69A, complete with showing the weather on both screens...

ICAO Flight Plans - RNAV/RNP?? by
Dan[_1_]
All,
I am trying to figure out how to complete the ICAO information on
fltplan.com for filing a flightplan for a C182 with a Garmin 530W.
The RNAV/RNP stuff has me confused. What would the proper answers be
for an aircraft with a 530W? How about a standard Garmin 430?
I've searched high and low...

IFR checkride coming up... by
Tom[_5_]
Hi guys. I've been doing my training, took the written yesterday and
have my checkride in 2 weeks.
Couple of questions.
1) The tolerance for MDAs on the test is +100/-0. The natural response
to this is of course to target the altitude MDA+50ft, giving 50ft
buffer in either direction.
My question...

Use of Anti Icing by
[email protected]
Does anyone know of an airplane manufacturer that specifies engine or
wing anti ice systems need to be activated a set amount of time
(minutes) prior to entering icing conditions? The ones I've seen only
say "prior to entering...", but no requirement given to have it on for
a set time prior in...

Cloud Height Forecast by
[email protected]
If I'm thinking about flying somewhere in the northeast and returning
in a few days, it'll be very helpful to know forecast cloud height
three days down the road. Knowing it'll be "cloudy" isn't too
helpful. In my Archer (not approved for icing) a hugh difference
between an overcast layer at...

Chief Counsel rulings.... by
[email protected]
Anyone know where to view ruling by the FAA's chief counsel? In
particular, I'm looking for the one that that states "departure
procedures" referred to in Far 91.129(g) are only those traffic
pattern departure routes that the FAA sometimes establishes for a
particular airport. As opposed to say...

Garmin 430W/530W first impressions by
Viperdoc[_4_]
Rode back with my friend in his turbine Bonanza after the installation of a
530W/430W. We had a good chance to play with both boxes during the trip. As
before, they are very intuitive and relatively easy to operate.
The screen write rate is a lot faster than previously, and the plane
position...

G1000 simulator by

I purchased the Raytheon G36 trainer software from Garmin. After
attaching a new Saitek Cyborg Evo and verifying the controls, I gave it
a try. The heading only seems to change when the rudder is activated:
banks leave the heading unchanged. Anyone else have this problem?
Also, even with a heading...

Is 91.175 enforced in the USA? by
Robert M. Gary
Peter wrote:
This is the reg which prevents flying instrument approaches unless it
is a published one.
In the UK, this is not illegal (on G-reg aircraft). But then we don't
get the radar services here, etc. Pilots tend to fly descents using a
GPS, etc.
In the USA, there are GPS...

FAA proposed change regarding instrument currency by

Among other things included in the massive list of changes the FAA is
proposing to Part 61 is a new allowance for utilizing PCATD, FS, and
FTDs in order to accomplish the recency of experience requirements for
IFR flight:
"Under proposed § 61.57(c)(2), a person could use an FS or FTD

After considerable research, I have pretty much written off adding weather
to my Garmin 530 right now. It looks like the GDL-49 just doesn't do what I
want, and is too susceptable to interference for efficient delivery of
detailed weather, and you have to add another damned VHF antenna (which
would...

IFR Simulators - non-PCATD by

I'm getting ready to buy a new PC and want to set it up for a little IFR simulation work. Not looking for a PCATD or anything. I'm thinking the latest version of MS Flt Sim and the appropriate control peripherals. I'm not a gamer - really just looking for a little procedure training.
