RTB by
Jim
Returned home late last night from a trip to the Dayton airshow. One
seemingly minor incident raised my curiousity.
A two plane detachment of F-117s were sent to the show. As is quite
typical one aircraft departed intending to provide flybys at other
regional shows before returning to Dayton for...

Aw ****s and Bravo Zulus by
Gordon
Everyone knows that one wipes out a career full of attaboys. What is your
favorite non-fatal "aw ****" story? I thought we could also make a thread and
tell about the best flying each of us encountered.
On Ike in 1980, we had Whales. Either one or two of the massive things, but
they were...

Wearing a G-1 flight jacket off base? by
Michael
What are the current regulations in regard to this? A friend of mine
in Chicago said while he was at lunch the other day he saw a Navy
officer in uniform and his G-1 at a fast food joint. He was suprised
to the see the flight jacket, because he was under the impression they
weren't allowed to be...

Radar from the 60s by
Charles Talleyrand
How good was shipborne radar in the 60s against a 2003 airforce? For example, could a 1964 ship detect an incoming modern strike
before the explosions began in the face of modern ACM.
I ask both because I'm curious about the past and because there are navies out
there using old-fashioned...

Wildcat on the Ronald Reagan by
Charles Talleyrand
Suppose someone tried to land an F4F Wildcat on a modern American
aircraft carrier. We'll give the carrier a few hours to prepare, and lets assume
the carrier is at sea and moving.
Can a WWII fighter land on a modern carrier? Can it get back in the air?
-Much Thanks

Phantom-II development story by

Here's an interesting tidbit that I got while reading Airtime's book
about the Phantom (looks great so far). Apparantly, during the preliminary
design stage, McDonnell and an aide went around talking to naval aviators to
see what they wanted. Then, they talked to the aviators' wives about...
