New 29 Palms Winchfest Video by
HoUdini
One of the event participants patched together a good marketing video
for our club from this years Winchfest at 29 Palms California. Three

How to simply determine the L/D of your glider by
jan
Hi Gang
Like you all I have questioned what the best L/D of my 3 (now 1)
gliders - DB800B, Stemme S10-VT and SparrowHawk were in reality
suspecting that real L/Ds would be lower than the manufacturers
published values. I have used a PDA for many years switching it
between gliders. Software is...

Nimbus 4 Accident by
Bill
I posted the message below on the thread, "Nimbus 4DT accident 31 July
2000 in Spain." I am posting it again for better visibility.
Stan Hall presented his analysis of the Nimbus-4DB accident in Minden,
NV, 1999. Stan's analysis is scary, to say the least.
The article, Probing for the Smoking...

sunglasses by
[email protected]
Hi,
I have been flying with Serengetti sunglasses for many years in a
sailplane with a clear
canopy. I bought a LS6 with a light blue tinted canopy which make my
cockpit to dark
when in the shade of cloud. Suggestion are welcome to solve this
problem.
Regards,
S6

Slips in turns and landing with winglets by
[email protected]
I know this is a silly question, but I was reading an article by Dick Johnson that talked about holding a slight slip while thermally. This article was written before winglets and I was wondering if the same idea applied to gliders with winglets. Also, as for slipping to lose altitude for landing...

Mike Rinaldi
I am looking to purchase a new (to me) XC ship. Which ones have the largest/roomiest cockpit? Not for a tall person, one with broad shoulders, about 5'9 and 200lbs. Discuss and Thank you in advance!

Attention US Standard Class Pilots by
[email protected]
The US competition Rules Committee is considering doing a one time
test of limited handicapping in the Standard Class at the 2012
nationals in Montegue.
This would be done under a waiver.
The objective is to try to improve participation and determine if this
is an effective means of doing so.

1-26 for first glider, or not? by
tstock
I know I will get replies on each end of the spectrum... but for a
first glider, low time pilot, it seems like a 1-26 would be a good
choice. Easy to fly, easy to land in tight spaces, cheap to maintain,
and very common and there are a few 1-26 groups, so help is
available. It's inexpensive (well...

Also if anyone owned Cobra and Avionic and can compare both models. Thank you Pavel

left alone.
This week we have seen behavior that can only be described as reckless.

A question to you fine soaring fraternity, what would your response be to
someone who suggested that it might be feasable to run a transponder in a

Alternative magnetic compass by
[email protected]
A sailplane's Flight Manual usually requires a magnetic compass (or an aviation compass)as minimum equipment. Well, panel space has become less available and you are seeing fewer sailplanes with panel or glare-shield mounted 2.25 Airpath C2xxx or PAI-700 aircraft specific compasses.
Anyone have a...

IGC Google Earth Replay by
[email protected]
may be someone is interested in a small programm ( http://ywtw.de/igcsim.html
) that allows you to replay IGC-files in Google Earth. It's a replay,
without use of kml, best for flights in the mountains :-)
