Common Route from JYO to FRG? by
Marco Leon
Hi all. Can anyone give me an idea of what a common route clearance would be
from the Wash DC area (KJYO) to the Long Island (KFRG) area? I tracked down
a preferred route to the DC area (JFK DIXIE V1 LEEAH V268 BAL KROLL) but I'd
like some ideas from other fliers more familiar with the local...

Garmin 196 & obstacle database. by

Has anyone else noticed that the new v4.0 software for the Garmin 196
adds "support for Obstacle database"? Does anyone know what this means?
Sounds like a potentially valuable upgrade to part of my existing IFR
flight bag. Hmmm...

Close call with engine failure in IMC by
G. Sylvester
I'm close to finishing my IFR. I did most of my training at night
but didn't get much IMC. Two out of the past 3 flights were in solid
IMC. Fortunately the night training was pretty good and I've
become somewhat comfortable quickly after the past 4 hours of IMC or so.
The plan was to do my...

IFR GPS certification by
nobody
I guess I've been living under a rock. I wanted to update the VFR GPS in
the panel to an IFR model. I started getting quotes on recon GNC 300XLs.
The units themselves were about 2,500-3,000. I was shocked to find out that
I had to install an annunciator, a new indicator and approx 30 hrs...

Thanks for all the good advise. I'll be making this a 2 day trip,
stopping in KS for an overnight, then a short morning flight to SAF to
arrive early in the day.
Can't wait!

FAA broadcast about TEB.. by

I got the following from the FAA on their email broadcast.. its normally
the way they send out info about local safety seminars.. Interesting how
they are addressing a local traffic issue on a national level.. prudent?
or overkill?

FTP access to Terminal Procedures by
Doug Carter
The FAA, AOPA, Sporty's etc. have good "point and click" HTML (web
browser) interfaces to US Terminal procedures but don't seem to allow
FTP access.
Does anyone allow FTP access to the TPP's?
This would make it a bit easier to write a shell script that could
download and print TPP's for a list of...

Clearance with an Odd Intersection by
Marco Leon
Has anyone received a route clearance that included an intersection that was
only on an approach chart and not in an Enroute Chart?
Flew IFR from FRG to GON with the following clearance: Farmingdale Three,
radar vectors BDR, direct MAD, MAD 126 radial to MONDI, direct.
For the life of me I couldn't...

How to find a CFII? by
[email protected]
I am ready to start working on my IFR training. I took an intensive
weekend crash course to pass the written and got a 93%, so that's out
of the way.
My CFI for my private was fabulous, but he was a real drill sergeant.
He's also no longer in the area. I have read Joe Campbell's IFR Diary
and that...

IFR w/pax under Single-Pilot/Single Aircraft 135 by
Bravo8500
Anybody know what the limitations are on flying IFR with passengers in
a single-engine under a single-pilot, single-aircraft part 135 cert?
Thanks for any info, I can't glean it from reading part 135.

Lost comm procedures by
Ron Garret
A couple of related questions. You'll want to get your southern
California approach plates out to follow this.
1. The preferred tower-enroute IFR routing from VNY to SNA ends at SLI,
but SLI is not an IAF for any approach into SNA. What should you do if
you lose comm before ATC starts to vector...

IFR then VFR back to KPAO by
[email protected]
Here's a kinda stupid question for SF Bay Area pilots.
Today is a nice day for some practice approaches in actual. We've got
ceilings in the 1800-2000 level, stratus, no precip or wind, generally
benign.
Okay, so I thought I'd head over from PAO and log some approaches at
the usual suspects:...

Instrument Procedures Handbook by

Last year the FAA sent me a copy of a new IFR textbook. The
construction of the book was such that while reading and underlining
over one-third of the pages came loose. I found many editing mistakes,
conflicting explanations and such a mixture of alphabetic
acronyms that I was constantly making...
