Dolphin flying by
Jonathan St. Cloud
Was reading an article by Mike Borgelt that when flying through a thermal you will not circle in you should just fly the STF.
I have always slowed in such thermals, sometimes slowing to thermal speed while putting the thermal flaps. I do try to accelerate before I leave the lift. My thought...

Winch Cable Splicing (w/o ferrules) by
Gary Emerson
In reading Derek's book, he makes mention that a cable can be
effectively repaired with out using aluminum or copper ferrules, but
apparently by carefully opening up the 7x7 stranded construction and
then interweaving the strands back together for a seamless repair.
Obviously this has advantages of...

Tow Signals by
Ramy
There had been yet another fatality recently as a result of
misinterpreting the open spoilers signal. True we all passed the
written test and know that wiggeling the rudder means check spoilers
and rocking the wings means release, yet so many students and
experienced pilots alike continiue to...

He's a electronic gizmo techy so I need, and I can't find photos

Two Seat Cobra Trailer Tire Replacement by
David Cleveland
I have a 2009 Cobra trailer designed for a two seat glider. The tires need replacement. The original tires are of size 195/70R14.
I cannot find the direct replacement trailer tires in the United States. I can find passenger tires of the same size, but not trailer tires. There are a couple of...

LiFePO4 batteries by
JS
TA posted about LiFePO4 batteries a while ago.
Using the Tenergy 10AH batteries, I'm impressed. Lighter, longer lasting.
6 hours of ClearNav, 302, 6201 and TT21 brings two 10AH batteries "down" to 13.1V. The old SLA and AGM stuff I'd been using now seems rubbish.
The Lithium Phosphate batteries...

Glider Fire Sale by
[email protected]
Question for u guys. Do you think we are going to see a massive glider fire sale after this china virus deal subsides? I wonder if this crisis and its associated lack of flying opportunities is going to convince many of the non-die-hard guys to leave the sport and divest themselves of many good...

Slip to landing on PPG practical test by
Roger Worden
I'm preparing for my Private test, and in discussing it with the local FAA
examiner, he indicated that one item on the test is a landing with no drag
devices, using only a turning and forward slips. As he explained it, the
task in the PTS is to demonstrate the ability to land totally...

Medium performance gliders by
[email protected]
I have read many posts about how gliders like the PW5, L33, and other
similar performance gliders are not the greatest cross country gliders
and that for the same money you can get older higher performance
gliders. My question is, if you forget about dollars per L/D, do
these type of gliders have...

The Decline of Soaring Awards by
John Foster
I read the recent article in Soaring and it has got me fired up. I have been a member of a small club in Washington State for the last 2 years, learning to fly. The club has a 2-33 and a Lark and a Pawnee. That's it. Badge flying has not been an emphasis, even though one qualifies for at...

Feb Soaring: MiniLAK FES article by

My article, Mini & Me, about test flying a Mini in Lithuania appears as a cover piece in the current Soaring. Also, Garett Willat has an interesting piece on the way FES may change XCountry soaring.

Spin to impact AOA by
fredsez
So many good ideas on AoA. Much thought and real considerationhas
have been expressed. Something (A-HA!) came to mind.
Visual indicators!
Back in 1901, or some where about then, I flew a 1-26 to a really
high altitude. I had left the area of recognizable land and decided to
look at the ground and...
