Requesting Flight Following from ground control by
Yossarian
I just learned recently that this was possible at my little airport,
Hawthorne CA (KHHR). Presumably they get a squawk for you from SoCal and
arrange your radar coverage. Couple questions--
1. What is the phraseology of the request to ground?
--I'm guessing it's just "ground, cessna 1234 can...

Commercial pilot requirements & training questions by
Yossarian
In the next few months I plan on getting my commercial single engine
land and multi engine ratings. I'm totally baffled by the aeronautical
experience requirements though.
FAR 61.129 is pretty clear that SEL and MEL each have required dual and
solo cross countries and night flight. However I...

Ideas for a commercial long x-c? by
Yossarian
I fly out of Hawthorne CA (KHHR) and would like to hear some ideas for a
250-mile cross country. This is to fulfull the long x-c requirement forr
the commercial license. I went up to Oakland this past summer, so I was
thinking something more easterly.
I'll be in a Cessna 172RG. I'm just going...

Copilot training program by
Yossarian
I'm considering putting together a "copilot training program" for my
flight school. This course is targeted towards regular passengers who
are not interested in becoming private pilots themselves--the spouse or
friend who goes flying with you all the time. The program would focus
on making that...

Is this legal for a private pilot? by
Yossarian
I'm an instrument rated private pilot. My CFI was going to fly with
one of his student pilots to an airport an hour away to go to the
student's vacation home, providing instruction along the way. Then he
would leave the student there for a couple days, and return to pick the
student up.
Now the...

Got my ground instructor ratings by
Yossarian
I was looking for something interesting to do while I build hours towards
my commercial certificate, so I decided to get my ground instructor
ratings. I took 3 exams Friday.
Fundamentals of Instruction: 90%
Advanced Ground Instructor: 90%
Instrument Ground Instructor: 96%
They were all pretty...

Procedure turn required? by
Yossarian
I was using a Frasca 141 sim today with an instructor when this question
came up. Fullerton CA (KFUL) VOR-A approach. At WILMA on V64, flying the
full approach. Do you need to turn outbound at the VOR for the procedure
turn?
Instructor says no because a Victor airway leads to the IAF. I say...

Air Force Form 181? by
Yossarian
Where to find? I would like to do a practice instrument approach at KPMD
(Palmdale) and I understand that this form is necessary, along with prior
approval.

Pharmaceuticals vs flying by
Yossarian
Hi, is there a site that lists prescription drugs that have an adverse
effect on flying? Does the FAA have a site like that? I'm poking around
but can't find jack.

Flying w/faulty gas gauge by
Yossarian
I understand that functional fuel gauges are required equipment for day VFR
flight. Yesterday during my preflight in a 172 I saw that the right gauge
was functioning intermittently--it would show full, flicker down to zero,
bounce around, etc. Tank was visually confirmed full. Mechanic...

Saw a low-flying rental... let the FBO know? by
Yossarian
Driving home today I saw a 172 that I've flown many times heading toward me
slowly at about 500'. This is in SoCal, so it's obviously a densely packed
urban area. In fact I pulled over and turned my car off so I could hear if
the Cessna was having engine trouble.
I'm debating whether to inform...

Hawthorne CA to San Francisco flight planning by
Yossarian
I'm planning my longest XC yet, from Hawthorne CA to (most likely) Hayward
Executive up by San Francisco. This will be a day VFR flight in a C172SP
in mid to late April. I'm pretty close to getting my instrument rating and
have 120 hours.
I'd like to get opinions on the route. The two choices I...
