Etymology of Pilot by
Jim Fisher
I've been reading "The DaVinci Code" (damn good book) and there was a
paragraph about a biblical character named Pilot. That got me curious about
the etymology of the word "Pilot." I wondered if there were some relation
to the title we carry and the bible character. There isn't. But what I...

Most Visible Color for Aircraft by
[email protected]
Howdy,
I've been looking all over, and I can't seem to find any discussions on the
relative visibility of various colors for aircraft. I would guess that the
best color might be different when viewed against the sky or the ground.
Any pointers will be welcome,
tom pettit

Nice Guys in Aviation by
Michael 182
A thread in RAO referenced nice guys in aviation. Let's give them credit.
Give an example when someone went above and beyond for you.
I got to the airport around 4:00 on a summer morning in Indianapolis. During
preflight I switched on the master to lower the flaps and check the fuel
gauges....

Rod MI
Hi I'm not a pilot but I'm thinking about purchasing some of these
light for my brother that is a pilot. My question is what do you think
of this light as a pilot stand point for IFR flying? Do you think this
light would be light enough for clipping onto a hat visor or something
else he flies a...

Frederick Wilson
Now that I have your attention I would like to get your feelings and
thoughts on a situation that has arisen by my dad's house.
Recently 2R2 went in not but a few blocks (straight line) from my dad's
house. I think it is great and he and the neighbors have no problems. Keep
in mind the...

Airmap 100/Palm VIIx by
dlevy
Anyone out there trying to get gps information to their Palm VIIx? I can't
find much specific info on palmflying.com. The palm keeps turning itself
off and the data link is very unreliable.
I can get Cetus GPS to work but cannot get FltMaster to work at all.
TIA.

New radar system may help airplanes avoid in-flight icing by
Pascal Duchemin
The buildup of ice on airplanes in flight is a major winter hazard for small
and commuter planes. But scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric
Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colo., are testing a new system this month that
may pinpoint water droplets in clouds that cause icing, potentially...

Unfriendly Skies by
Roger Long
I picked up a 1989 book in our local swap shop called "Unfriendly Skies" by
Captain "X" and Reynolds Dodson. It's an "as told to" about the deregulated
airline industry and a pretty good read. It sounds like not much has
changed in the last 10 years except the airlines are losing even more...

Setting QNH by

I was in the trusty Pawnee this weekend and checked the altimeter, I can
only select settings from 28.10 to 31.50, so.. following the others advice
of setting QNH. I could not.

Received my first speed restriction by
Peter R.
Yesterday, while wrapping up my complex, high performance instruction in a
Bonanza V35, I received my first speed restriction from ATC during the
approach back into the class C airport. "Bonanza XX, do not exceed 150,
number two following a Dash 8, cleared ILS 28 approach."
After a little more...

On the way to the airport I stopped to fill up my truck with $2.05/gal
