initial fix an intersection by
SFM
Why is it bad flight planning to use an intersection for your initial fix on
your IFR flight?
My plan has two NAVs and an IFR GPS. So I have at least 3 ways to identify
the intersection granted doing it with one NAV is painful during departure
but it could be done. I curious to hear people...

TEC, can anyone use small words and explain this to me? by
Snowbird
OK, one thing I've never really understood is the point
of Tower Enroute Control. Maybe it doesn't apply much
here in the Midwest where there's space between TRACONs.
Can anyone explain this to me, using small words and speaking
slowly?
Specifically, when is this used, what is the benefit,...

How do you handle your EFB in the cockpit? by
greg
I'd like to know how most people handle using their tablet PC based
EFBs in the cockpit.
I'm trying to figure out the best way to mount or hold my Fujitsu LT
C-500 tablet for viewing approach plates using JeppView Flightdeck
(Cessna 182). I currently have the tablet and all the necessary...

Clearence available upon request by
Jeff
This one kinda stumps me everytime I am told this.
Call tower, request your IFR clearence, they tell you "taxi to runway
xxx - clearence available upon request"
what I always do is just read back the taxi instructions and wait for
them to call me back with the clearence. I guess I dont understand...

Completing the Non-precision approach as a Visual Approach by
John Clonts
I'm inbound on the final approach segment of the VOR-A approach at T82
(Fredericksburg Texas):
http://www.myairplane.com/databases/approach/SouthCentral/T82_vd_gA.pdf
At about 3 miles east of the airport I'm at the MDA of 2460 MSL ("766 AGL"),
mostly in a 700 foot overcast. Through a break in...

How fast should an ADF point? by
Ben Jackson
My ADF (Narco 841) quit pointing shortly after I got the plane, so
I pulled it and found it was covered in swarf (metal shavings) so I
cleaned it off, cleaned the contacts (card edge connector) and put
it back in. Now it points again. What I'm wondering is: How fast
should it point? Let's say...

restarting instrument flying by
Matthew S. Whiting
Has anyone here taken an extended hiatus from flying and then returned
to currency? I sold my airplane and quite flying 4.5 years ago to build
a house and for some other economic reasons. I'm about ready to
re-enter the flying world and know that a fair bit has changed since
1999. Any...

Question to the IFR Pilots Out There by
Cecil E. Chapman
For those of you who have your instrument ticket, how many hours of actual
IMC did you have when you got your ticket.
At approx 40 hours of instrument time I have a 'whopping' .9 hours of ACTUAL
IMC... I sincerely hope I'm going to get to see a lot more before I get my
instrument ticket - which...

monitoring China air communication with a radio in Taiwan by
Dan Jacobson
Sitting here in central Taiwan, I bet on my VHF scanner I can hear
flights above China talking to controllers, if they are high enough in
the air. Frequencies to monitor would be Hong Kong 121.3,
Guangzhou=?, Shanghai=?, Xiamen=?, Fuzhou=?. A Google search failed.
I also notice 118-136 Mhz....

Safety Pilot Qualification? by
Richard
I'm sure this has be hashed over many times, but I can't find it now. In
the current issue of "IFR" (December, 2003), an editorial answer to a
reader's question contained the following - (referring to a safety pilot
requirements):
".... if you use a safety pilot and write that safety pilot's...

single pilot ifr trip tonight by
Guy Elden Jr.
Just got back from a good proficiency practice flight. This was the first
time I'd flown single pilot IFR at night with conditions that could
potentially deteriorate to actual instrument. (cloudy, rain developing as
the flight progressed, visibility dropping somewhat)
The basic rundown... got the...

NACO chart question by
Steve Mahoney
In my limited IFR flying.. I have always used Jepp charts. (They seemed much
easier to read and use) The cost difference and their availability on the
web has caused me to seriously considered switching to NACO.
After reviewing these again (NACO) they seem much improved over the old
days......

VFR on top by
MC
Australia is changing/rearranging its' airspace model to more closely
line-up with ICAO and also to be a _very_ close copy of the current
USA system.
Basically there will be a heck of a lot of class-E. (usually bottomed
at FL180, but in some areas down to A085).
Our radar coverage won't change...
