East Coast Visibility by Kyle Boatright
I was having lunch with a buddy of mine the other day who has been a pilot for almost 50 years. We discussed the bad visibility we have in the South and up the Eastern seaboard in the summer. Haze to 10,000', lateral visibility frequently under 5 miles, etc. He said that it is much better now...

GPS in Europe by Doug
With Europe developing it's own Galileo "GPS" system, I was wondering how common GPS usage is in Europe in small General Aviation aircraft? Also, how common is it with the Commercial Carriers? How common are GPS approaches? Are the GPS approaches scheduled to become Galileo approaches?

PIC seat in England by RomeoMike
My wife was watching a BBC show about a guy auctioning off possessions to buy flying lessons. At the end of the show there are clips of him sitting in the right seat during instruction. Is the right seat the PIC seat in British GA aircraft just as it is in autos? Or what's the deal?

Wireless at Osh by John T
This has been a recurring topic with no clear answers. I say, hoof it over to the hilton. They have wireless for their guests. There is no sign on page, but I have no idea what their range is. John

Dumb & Dumber by Jay Honeck
As we were preparing to depart the Quad Cities Air Show yesterday (an outstanding show, BTW, with the Blue Angels and perfect spring weather), I became aware of a Piper Warrior having difficulty a few aircraft down from us. All transient aircraft had been parked in the grass off the parallel...

So Much for "The World On Time" by john smith
I arrived at KTZR/Bolton Field/Columbus OH at 0930 this morning for what I was told would be a 1000-1030 arrival of the donated FedEx 727. By 1125, I could no longer wait (had to go pick up my son from summer school at 1145). As I was leaving the airport boundaries, I heard the crew call inbound...

Pylon 8 problem by gatt
Hey, all, I'm having a problem. Before the winter weather grounded me for a couple of months, I was nailing Pylon 8s (for the commercial test) almost from the moment they were demonstrated to me. Now I've got everything else down, but the easiest *$@#^&! manuever of them all for me is suddenly...

Flare vs flair by Bob Gardner
Please understand that I am a geezer, and getting crotchety in my old age. I have Summit Aviation's CD-ROM that includes just about every piece of paper issued by the FAA...regulations, AIM, PTS, ACs, etc etc etc. I have searched this resource for two words: flair and flair. My Webster's Ninth had...

Confused re transponders and ADS-B by Andrew Gideon
I understand that mode S transponders have unique identifiers, thus eliminating the need for beacon "codes" as we use them today. Is that right? Do people flying with mode S today still need to use beacon codes for compatibility reasons? TIS travels via the mode S data link. TIS-B uses ADS-B's...

FARs concerning operations in foreign country by [email protected]
Hi! I`m considering to buy a Columbia 400 for private and business purposes. The aircraft will be N-registered, although operated in Germany (which is legally possibly using a trust i.e.). As I`m planning to earn my Commercial certificate, I was wondering whether there were any FARs which prevent...

A question on reversers by [email protected]
If you float in above the threshold a fair bit higher than Vref, is it acceptable technique to chance the reverser to preclude landing too far down the runway? Thanks in advance, Ramapriya

Which DC Headphone is best choice? by [email protected]
I'm going to update my 15 yr old SoftComm mono headphones and would appreciate opinions and reasons on choice of replacement. I don't fly many hours a year or particularly long distances (3hr max) so I'm leaning towards the David Clark H10-60 or H10-13.4. The only difference appears to be weight...
