Bremerton, WA by Mike Rapoport
We will be flying (hopefully) to Bremerton, WA (KPWT) on Wednesday and the weather in the PNW does not look very good either now or in the forecast (widespread fog, vis 1/8sm). Are there any local fog effects at Bremerton? Are there airports in the area that are not as likely to have fog? ...

1 Attachment(s) IFR with a VFR GPS by Wizard of Draws
OK, I broke down and sprung for the Lowrance Airmap 2000c instead of the 1000. Wow. Normally I rent a plane that has a panel-mounted IFR certified Garmin 430, but that may change due to circumstances beyond my control in a few months. Obviously I can't file /G IFR without a proper IFR GPS, but...

Slant R? by Marco Leon
Given the recent changes in the regs, do us folks with certified Garmin 430's and 530's file slant R now? I heard there's a write-up by AOPA. Can someone point me to that article please? Thanks, Marco Leon

Let's Be Honest by skym
I have a recently installed Garmin GPS430. But I also have a Lowrance (handheld) 1000 GPS to use. The Lowrance is MUCH better at situational awareness than the panelmount. Please understand--I have no complaints about the 430; it is a great unit. However, the Lowrance 1000 is a very, very nice...

Marlene at Ramp 66 in North Myrtle BEach by Rich Badaracco
This request goes out to anybody that knows Marlene at the Ramp 66 FBO in North Myrtle Beach (CRE). Marlene has worked at the FBO for over 21 years and if you've ever stopped there you have probably run into her. After 21 years Marlene is retiring and I would like to put together a book of...

Flyers, If anyone is interested in Barry Schiff's Proficient Flying DVD (3 DVD Set) I am selling mine on EBay. http://tinyurl.com/9ez2e As most of you may know I have been selling my DVD's and I'm now quite familiar with what's out there in this market. I have to say that *this* set was one of...

TIS and What could have been by Chuck
Unnerveing thing happen to me today. I have TIS displayed on the Garmin 430. I was 15 or 20 miles north of Moraine (I73) in southern Ohio and talking to Dayton Controller under Flight Following. I'm at 4500 ft and landing at Moraine. I request (I'm in his air space) the controller that I would...

KAP140 autopilot and a KLN94 GPS question by STICKMONKE
I got my IFR rating 1 month ago and now have a license to learn. Pont of confusion. I enter a "direct-to" in the GPS and fly the desired track (DTK) heading with the Heading Bug and the autopilot in heading mode to the IAF. As I

PANS-OPS by Greg Farris
Anyone know which places use PANS-OPS to define procedures and which use TERPS, and why? Is there a historical or political context to this? Why do international authorities go to such lengths to maintain two systems which essentially accomplish the same thing? I just got a bunch of stuff from...

Are "Popups" A Hassle? by skym
For the ATC guys: I frequently have departed VFR, but then do a popup if needed. Frequently these are sortof foreseeable possibilities, but often enough I have been able to proceed VFR all the way. I've often wondered just how much of a hassle it is to ATC to have to deal with a popup.

Anyone using the Lowrance 2000c's new Terrain Awareness MCC card ? by C. Osbourne
I'm considering getting the Terrain Awareness MCC card, for my 2000c and wondering if any of the list members have installed this upgrate. A third party, (non-compensated) review or or opinions would be very helpfull for our list members who are considering getting of these. What do you think of...

Night flying times by Stubby
There is confusion in regard to which "twilight" times are used to define night flying. What would be wrong with a change to the FARs that say something like "Flight occuring an hour after GPS-indicated sunset time and an hour before GPS-indicated sunrise is defined as night flying"? (The...

Why does a prop ice up so apparently readily? by The Visitor
Were they the wide cord butcher props? Perhaps they spin slower? Mine are electrically heated but only the inboard third or so. (seneca) Peter wrote: The other day I was talking to a commercial pilot of a big twin passenger turboprop. He has been iced up a few times and recently was down...

Why does a prop ice up so apparently readily? by Mike Rapoport
The potential for icing is based on the amount of supercooling more than the theoretical or actual skin temp. It seems doubtfulthat the skin heats up as much as would be predicted if the air has droplets in it that are actually impacting the surface. These two things combined with the fact that...

IFR/Flight Following -- ATC Preferences? by Mitty
Departing cross country out of the Minneapolis area in severe clear, I will usually ask for either flight following or will file. I depart from KMIC, which is under the 4000 foot shelf of the MSP bravo airspace. For example, Friday I am going from KMIC to KGPZ, which is a couple hundred miles to...
