clearance delivery question by PaulH
If I file an IFR flight plan 2 hours in advance from departure from a towered airport and then leave really early or really late: 1. Is the FP normally available to my local tower about half an hour after filing? 2. How long does it remain in the "system" if I get delayed?

How to back out FPL changes on GNX-480? by Roy Smith
It never ceases to amaze me how I keep finding something I don't know how to do on the GNX-480 after all this time. Had a flight plan going when I got a pretty significant re-route in flight. I went into FPL, hit EDIT, and started deleting waypoints with the CLR button. After a while, I...

Weight of Ice by gwengler
I roughly calculated that the weight of 1 in. of ice on all forward surfaces on my T182 (fixed gear) is about 250 lbs. Anyone cares to comment on this? Gerd (ATPL)

Vista64 experience with Jeppesen, Garmin, and FSX by Ron A.
Here is my experience with the release version of Vista64 Ultimate so far as it relates to Jeppesen, FSX and also Garmin. Vista is available as a developer's subscription on Microsoft's MSDN right now. I downloaded Vista64 Ultimate from MSDN and installed it on a new machine I built. My old XP...

IFR Practical test requirements by kevmor
So I'm reading my ASA Practical test standards booklet for Instrument Airplane and it says: (pg.6) 2. pass the appropriate instrument rating knowledge test SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE 24TH MONTH BEFORE THE MONTH IN WHICH THE PRACTICAL TEST WAS TAKEN. This means if I took the knowledge test...

ASA On Top 9? by Hamish Reid
I realise it's only been released for a few days, but as I'm in the market for a non-MS sim, and as I have an older version that works just fine but needs updating so it can do real GPS, etc., does anyone have anything to say one way or another about ASA's new On Top 9? Thanks, Hamish

Route Planning by Kevin Clarke
Question for folks who've done this a heck of a lot more than me. How do you plan routes? I have a PA28-180/G that I fly. The navdata is always kept up to date so I can always file /G. Which I suppose might be the best answer here. But the vagaries of ATC, especially in the Northeast US make me...

ATPL student by Frode Berg
Today I finally took the plunge and ordered the distance study course towards the ATPL frozen theory! I have been wanting this for years, but it's quite a costly thing to start, so it's taken a while! I now have 280 hours on my PPL, and looking forward to get my IR rating maybe next...

Jeppesen renewal notices by jmk
Am I the only one that thinks that Jeppesen renewal notices are well past the phrase "sleazy" in their wordiing? I had a Skybound subscription that I did not renew when the subscription period ran out. Now I am getting these renewal notices (which is fine in and of itself) that say things like...

Standalone GPS by Bob Gardner
To keep me from looking at every approach plate PDF in the country for some research I am doing, would you folks give me some examples of standalone (not RNAV(GPS)) approaches in your areas of operation? Thanks. Bob Gardner

Type-like Instrument Ratings by jsmith
With the increasing popularity and availability of rental and training aircraft equipped with "glass" panels, are we heading toward limited or type like instrument ratings? For example, will an pilot trained from the onset in an aircraft equipped with a Garmin G-1000 panel from private through...

Efis and other leading technology by Mark
I am planning the upgrade of a Piper Navajo panel. I wouldn't mind spending the money for "cutting edge", but it is not clear what is avialable and the infrastructure to support it. Could anyone provide informed councel on EFIS or other certified options? My questions are along the following: 1. ...

Best portable map to help when doing IFR flight by [email protected]
I went up with a friend who is a CFII to do some night IFR last Tuesday. Everything went fine, except when So. Cal. cleared me to RAL for CNO GPS-B while I was going out bound from the published hold at PDZ, I could not get RAL programmed into my Trimble 2000 Approach as the IAF. I tried it...

Departure/Enroute RAIM by [email protected]
A chart change notice (and a similar Jeppesen briefing bulletin) were sent to all subscribers in the past few weeks setting forth the new Type A or B requirements for RNAV OPDs, SIDs, and RNAV routes. The practical aspect for light aircraft equipped with either TSO 129 or 146 boxes is that a...

Connecting enroute to approach charts by Ron Garret
I'm going VNY-LAS. DUATS auto routing came up with a route that ends at OASYS on V394. Trick is, OASYS is not an IAF for any approach into LAS as far as I can tell. What should I do if I lose comm? A related question: some approaches into LAS have IAFs that I can't find on the enroute chart...

Why are some NDBs not displayed on Low Alt Enroute Charts? by Adlerson
Subject says it all. For instance, here in Southern California, the NDB Petis is on the low chart, while ElMonte is not. Anyone know why? Is it because of monitoring, or lack of? Or is it because one is part of the enroute structure, and the other one not? Or because one has approaches involving...

who does VOR "calibration" for most accurate VOR approaches? by Greg
Hi, I recently learned that VOR can be "calibrated" or adjusted to take into account any error discovered at the 30-day check. For example, if you need to set OBS at 44 to get centered CDI on the 42 radial from VOR on airport checkpoint, and 219 to center CDI on the 222 radial, then you record the...

Mo Why publish a plate for an OTS approach? by [email protected]
What part of your butt did you pull that BS out of? Congress has nothing to do with the federal register. Bob Gardner wrote: An instrument approach is, in effect, an act of Congress. Although they do it through obscure references to Part 97, each approach must be published in...
