Precision instrument flying by
Matt Whiting
I was just reviewing the new Elmira One departure procedure. I think
the government has let GPS go to their heads. Unless I'm reading it
incorrectly, it specifies the initial heading out to TWO decimal places!
The procedure is pretty trivial as it basically says to fly runway
heading to 4000...

KLN94 updates with Sandisk writer - unit-specific? by

Garmin 300XL GPS Approach didn't arm by
Steve S
I was flying a practice approach today and loaded the approach (Full
approach GPS 20 at RUQ, Rowan County, NC) into my Garmin 300XL. I flew the
approach from initial fix to the final fix but the approach never armed and
consequently never activated. The approach showed as active on the route
page...

Track, Bearing, Course, Heading by
[email protected]
Hello,
I'm sure I should know the difference between all of these... but it
kinda starts to blur together. I'm sure there are others on here who'd
like a refresher. Anyone out there want to explain the differences to
us?

Limiting use of Pilot Controlled Lighting by
[email protected]
Having just crossed the border, and visited a few non-towered airports
in the US, I'm afraid I may have done some injustice by using the PCL
pilot controlled lighting a bit too much. Knowing the somewhat
precarious financial state of those airports, and the electricity hog
the lights can be, I'm...

ILS vs circle to land by
Yossarian
Recently I flew a 172 to SBA. ILS 7 was in use, wind 250 at 7. The
runway is quite long so I wasn't concerned about the tailwind.
However, if I had been concerned about the wind direction, is it best
to ask the approach controller for a different runway? Or would the
tower deal with it? I...

I love being instrument rated. :) by
Dane Spearing
Out here in the Rocky Mountain states, those of us who are instrument
rated rarely get a chance to practice our skills in real IMC since
"real IMC" usually implies either thunderstorms (summer) or severe icing
condiditions and blowing snow (winter). However, today I was given a
real treat by the...

Garmin 430 user waypoints by
Red Baron
Hello,
I am a VFR pilot and I currently have a 96C in which I loaded some 700
user waypoints, neede in Italy to find VFR reporting points and
airstrips. My new club's airplane will have a Garmin GNS430. I contacted
Garmin in order to know if it would be possible to load waypoints
through the serial...

Which GPS w/laptop moving map? by
FlyBean
Hello!
The new version 3.0 of Seattle Avionics's Voyager just came out, and
it has a nice moving map. I want to start using it on my laptop, but
need to buy a GPS, first. SA recommends the Pharos GPS360, but I
always thought the Garmin GPS 10 may be the better option. Does
anyone have...

GPS Notams of outages by
Robert Scott
I have seen some GPS Notams about likely unreliability in certain
areas over certain very narrowly-defined periods of time. Can anyone
tell me what sort of known activities create these conditions?

Annunciation Requirements for KLN89B/KX155/209A by
N523RV
I have acquired a KX-155, KLN-89B and a 209A indicator. The 209A has a built-in relay to switch between the GPS and NAV. I'm trying to figure out what 'annunciation' is _required_ for this setup. The MD41 annunciator is about $950. I can get the control head only for about $700.
The real...

The longest clearance ever by

I am tired - just landed from a 12 hour, 20 minute flight from LAX to
Taiwan. I got a good laugh though today when our PDC was INOP, and the
F/O had to call to get the clearance. It was for sure the longest
clearance I've ever heard! Here it...

Warm spot for IFR finish-up by
Dave Reinhart
I'm looking for suggestions for a school to do an IFR finish-up course
in December or January. I live in Massachusetts and while I don't mind
flying actual IFR there's entirely too much ice in the clouds around
here that time of year. A break from the winter chill wouldn't be bad,
either.

Which PC Flightplanning Software EFB Would You Recommend? by

Avionics Voyager/GlassView), RMS FlightsoftPro/Vista, FlightPrep,

Picking a Star/DP by

I got my instrument rating at an accelerated school in California.
Overall, I think my instruction went well, and I was very happy with

troubles.
There was one part though that never quite made sense to me. My
instructor told me to...

Wrong data in Jepp GPS database? by
Roy Smith
I had a strange experience with our CNX-80 earlier today. Heading back
into HPN, we tried to bring up the approach frequency 126.4, and discovered
it wasn't in the database. There were the normal secondary freqs (120.8
and 124.65), but no 126.4. Then I looked up DXR (Danbury, right next...
