Fujitsu LT C-500 as EFB questions... by greg
I'm looking for comments and suggestions specifically about using a Fujitsu LT C-500 as a backup tool for approach plates using Jeppview with Flightdeck. Although I'll always be printing my plates, would it really be possible to use this thing in a pinch? Has anyone tried a USB GPS with one of...

How do you handle your EFB in the cockpit? by greg
I'd like to know how most people handle using their tablet PC based EFBs in the cockpit. I'm trying to figure out the best way to mount or hold my Fujitsu LT C-500 tablet for viewing approach plates using JeppView Flightdeck (Cessna 182). I currently have the tablet and all the necessary...

who does VOR "calibration" for most accurate VOR approaches? by Greg
Hi, I recently learned that VOR can be "calibrated" or adjusted to take into account any error discovered at the 30-day check. For example, if you need to set OBS at 44 to get centered CDI on the 42 radial from VOR on airport checkpoint, and 219 to center CDI on the 222 radial, then you record the...

Garmin 430 and ILS by Greg Esres
The Garmin 430 documentation says that you can use the GPS for course guidance on an ILS/LOC up until the final approach fix. Where exactly does the approval for this come from? My inclination would have been that in absence of an overlay, you could not use GPS anywhere after the IAF. Also,...

Garmin 430, weak Loc/VOR by Greg Esres
A student recently installed a Garmin 430. It will not pick up a nearby VOR on the ground, while his old 170B will. The needle comes alive just after liftoff, but it does seem to have a lot of course roughness. His localizer also exhibits a lot of course roughness when far out on the localizer,...

Logging PIC time as student instrument pilot in IMC by Greg Esres
I recently realized that I should not have included any "actual" (IMC) time recorded in my logbook as PIC time while I was an instrument student. Why not? If you were actual, then it was PIC. how about adding a "corrective" (new) entry? That's what I do. Just make +/- entries to total...

ATC says wrong position by Greg Esres
When being vectored, and ATC says your 4 miles from X, I noticed occasionally that they state the wrong X. They confuse the FAF with the IF. For this reason, I tell students to never rely on ATC's distance statements to make a descent. How often do others see this?

Complete Reversal or Not? by Greg Esres
Can anyone suggest any reasons why you shouldn't use GPS or DME to lead your turns when approaching a fix, such as an IAF, on a non-GPS approach? (Meaning that you don't wait for complete reversal of the nav instrument.) The AIM has a couple of requirements for a "complete reversal" of...

KLN94 LOC DME Source by Greg Esres
Anyone have a tip as to the best way to enter the LOC DME source on the KLN94? The NRST function won't always pick it up, if there are a lot of intersections around. I've tried loading the fix into an alternate flight plan, and then do a DIRECT operation later, but I couldn't get that to work.

Misleading Notam by Greg Esres
One of our local pilots misunderstood a common Notam, as shown below. He thought the "ADD: From Shelby to RW 17: 3.52 degrees" meant add 3.52 degrees to the final approach course. How reasonable do you think his interpretation? (BTW, the notam just adds a descent gradient to a NP approach.) FDC...

Controller Forum by Greg Esres
NATCA (National Air Traffic Controllers Association) runs a web-based forum where you can ask questions of controllers. Seems like a great resource, but it's presently highly underutilitzed. http://bbs.natca.net I'm sure pilots and controllers would benefit if the site became more highly...
