More info on GNS 430/530 WAAS upgrade by
PPT33R
I recently made an inquiry to Garmin regarding their new requirement
that GNS 430/530 owners pre-order the WAAS upgrade prior to November
2005 to guarantee the $1500 price their marketing department has been
stating for the past 2 years...
Keeping in mind the WAAS upgrade for these boxes are...

Aviation Charts for Puerto Vallarta by
Will
Where can I find approach and departure charts for rural airports
in the Sierra Madre mountains that surround Puerto Vallarta,
Mexico? I realize many of these mountain airports are little
more than a dirt road next to a farm and do not have published
instrument approaches, but I would still like...

"normal" procedure for pop-up filing by
paul kgyy
I was taught that, if I needed to file an IFR flight plan in the middle
of a trip, I should contact FSS first to file and get clearance, then
contact ATC. On the other hand, I hear frequent references in
rec.aviation to pilots who just contact ATC directly. Does this depend
on how busy ATC is -...

Say Again #51 by
[email protected]
I was just reading Don Brown's latest (6/22) on avweb:
http://www.avweb.com/news/columns/189944-1.html
This column is about NORDO IFR procedures. I like Don's columns and
find their nitpickiness to be consistent with safe flying, if a little
bit annoying.
But in this column, two things stuck out...

More Garmin Gripes by
Viperdoc
I just installed a GDL69A data link with my 530, which works great. It gives
Nexrad radar as well as graphical METARs, and superimposes the information
on the basic map pages.
It is also supposed to provide text metars, but this will not be available
until "sometime in the future"
Worst, I have...

ELITE or ON TOP for IFR training? by
John Clonts
My $.02-- FS2004 is good enough for procedures and scan. Don't bother
buying a yoke or pedals. Use a cheap "gamepad" type controller with
thumb-joystick (instead of a grip/wrist joystick). Go to "user
controlled weather, advanced" and turn turbulence to max, both on the
clouds panel and the...

Roy Smith?: GNS480 training by
Dave Butler
I was going to send this as an email to Roy, but then I realized there might be
value for everyone in the response, and maybe Roy wouldn't mind sharing with the
whole group.
Roy, If I'm not mistaken, you instruct in a club with a fleet of GNS480s. My
partners and I are about to install a GNS480 in...

Who has fitted a TRI-band ELT to a TB20? by
Chris G.
Worldwide, the 121.5/243.0 MHz ELT signals will no longer be detected by
the SAR satellites. The following references will explain it better
than I can, but here is the first line of the text from the URL: "The
International Cospas-Sarsat System will cease satellite processing of
121.5/243 MHz...

Arrow add-on for FS2004 by
Paul kgyy
Any recommendations on the best Piper Arrow add-on for MSFS2004? I
found a couple with google but the downloads don't seem to work.
Doesn't have to be freeware. Mostly what I want is a reasonably
accurate power model. I have ASA's On Top but the GPS is crummy and
the power model has no...

KVUO to KAST & Back IFR 1.8 Act. 2.7 Total "First In Act. IFR X-C" by

KVUO To KAST
Well, After getting my instrument rating 2 months ago and just playing local
in my 150 getting used to Popping in and out of the clouds totally different
than the hood I decided it was a good day for a real IFR X-C not a very far
one but ceilings were 1,300' local and 2,500' at...

KLN94 -> GTX330 (GND/ALT switching) by
Bill Chernoff
I have a GTX327, and it has a squat switch which is used to switch from
ground to air modes. Maybe your 330 has the same. You may not need the GPS
connected to the 330... I am no expert, I am reading this out of the manual.
By the way, I am interested in making a remote switch for...

Why no stepdown fix in GPS? by
Roy Smith
I flew the KFWN VOR or GPS-A (http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0506/05412VGA.PDF)
this morning with a CNX-80. Annoyingly, ANKLE (the stepdown fix) is not in
the database. You get SAX-MAGLV. It seems like SAX-ANKLE-MAGLV would
make a lot more sense. Is the some reason it's left out of the database?

Holding pattern reporting by
Yossarian
At what point do you report holding to ATC? Upon reaching the holding fix,
or when you are established in the hold and again crossing the fix? For
example, your direction of flight makes a parallel entry appropriate. You
cross the fix and turn outbound. Should you report then or wait till...

Extra Kollsman Altimeter Pointers by
[email protected]
I have an old Square D Kollsman 3 pointer altimeter that I think it's
about 50 or more years old and seems to be in working condition. The
body is about 2 13/16 diameter. The label on the back says part no.

The three altitude pointers give the usual altitude readout. The little

Safe, Single-Pilot IFR generalities by
Greg Farris
Here are some "general" tips for safe, single-pilot IFR, gleaned from
Larry Bartlett's refresher course. These tips do not represent the "meat
and potatoes" of the video course, but are thrown in at a couple of
points as generalities. How many agree with these :
1) No Single-Pilot, single engine...
