NDB IAPs... going... gone by
[email protected]
I got a much thicker than usual packet from Jeppesen yesterday, and the
bulk of the changes were the removal of dozens of NDB IAPs. I had heard
that the FAA was looking to decomission a lot of "redundant" NDB
appoaches, but was surprised to see that they were really gone so soon.
I guess there's...

Say Again #51 by
[email protected]
I was just reading Don Brown's latest (6/22) on avweb:
http://www.avweb.com/news/columns/189944-1.html
This column is about NORDO IFR procedures. I like Don's columns and
find their nitpickiness to be consistent with safe flying, if a little
bit annoying.
But in this column, two things stuck out...

currency question by
[email protected]
Have you ever "made up" an approach to a nonexistent airport for the
purposes of training or currency? I mean, to pick a space in the
boonies, and then use nearby navaids to fashion a homemade approach to
an imaginary runway. Some instructors will do this.
Now, I was wondering, is there any way...

argh -- flight plan routes by
[email protected]
ventmode
I am an inexperienced instrument pilot and I just don't understand why
we file routes on our flight plans at all!
I never get what I filed, anyway, and it's not uncommon that the route
I actually get shares not a single waypoint with what I filed.
It is an interesting game to try to...

IFR then VFR back to KPAO by
[email protected]
Here's a kinda stupid question for SF Bay Area pilots.
Today is a nice day for some practice approaches in actual. We've got
ceilings in the 1800-2000 level, stratus, no precip or wind, generally
benign.
Okay, so I thought I'd head over from PAO and log some approaches at
the usual suspects:...

Another question about simulators by
James Blakely
I use Jeppensen's FlightPro to maintain my instrument scan because I just
don't get enough real IMC time.
The one thing I don't like about it is when you break out, there is no
ground information at all. The ground is simply an all green field. The
airport is nothing more than a black stripe...

Capt. Al Haynes sorta OT. by
James Blakely
I know everyone hear remember Capt. Haynes. Capt. Haynes was the pilot of
United flight 232 when the center engine suffered an uncontained failure
and the DC-10 lost all of its hydraulic systems. Capt. Haynes landed the
ship at Sioux City using differential power. His handling of the...

Marker beacon flashes by
James L. Freeman
I have an old marker beacon that works normally (lights and tone),
except that the inner and outer lights also twinkle on and off
whenever there is a transmission--either on the intercom or external,
originated by me or anyone else. In other words, any communication
activity causes the MBR lights...

FAR 91.171 interpretation by
James L. Freeman
What is the point of the phrase "at the airport of intended departure"
in FAR 91.171(b)(1)?
Interpreted literally, it would mean that while the VOR check done
with a VOT is good for 30 days, it is only valid for departures from
the airport where it was done. That makes no sense. Any...

Garmin 430 by
[email protected]
I have a VFR only 172 and I am considering IFR training.
I am looking for the most practical way to make my plane IFR certified
and useful.
At first glance, it appears to me that the Garmin 430 provides a LOT of
useful information for relatively not much money.
I have 2 questions though....

Approaches and takeoff mins. by
jamin3508
Today I awoke to find a cloud sitting on the ground bringing the vis down
to 1/16th of a mile. All the airlines here in KROC were forced to hold
from takeoff until it lifted a little. I know that the part 91 is 0/0
unless otherwise noted, what about part 131 or the airlines? Do they...

Currency by
jamin3508
Hi all.
My currency just ran out last month and I was wondering within the next
six months Im allowed to have a safty pilot with me or do I need a
instructor to perform the six approches holds and tracking? I looked
through the FARS and it really says nothing about who can be with you
during the...

Oshkosh 2003 photo's are up by
Jay Honeck
If anyone cares to see a few hundred Oshkosh photo's, I put them on my
site..
Great pix, Dennis!
Did you get any aerial shots of the North 40 that you didn't post? I'd sure
like one of our campsite!

Avmap 4 GPS - anyone knows anything about it??? by
Jay Honeck
I've finally located the manuals at
http://www.pilotmall.com/page/1/PROD/26/17390
Mary and I own (and LOVE) the AvMap EKP-IIIC, the predecessor to the EKP-IV.
We played with the IV extensively at OSH this year, and I fell in love with
it. It's smaller, thinner -- yet still has a BIGGER,...

GDL69A or GPS 496? by
Jay Maynard
I flew with my boss for steak at Harris Ranch last night in his A36. On the
way, we got to talking about GPS systems. He's got a Garmin 396, and was
telling me that it (and the 496) would talk to the GNS430W the same way as
the GDL69A, complete with showing the weather on both screens...

Precession of 10 degrees in 10 minutes too much? by
Jay Moreland
I need to find out if there is an official maximum amount of precession
for a Directional Gyro. My aircraft precesses 10 degrees in 10 minutes
during mostly straight and level flight with only a few shallow banks.
One avionics tech told me that it depends on the gyro manufacturer as to
what is...

GPS Degradation in ZDC/ZNY areas by

affect GPS this way?
No outages encountered, just misleading track...
