Abrupt Controller by
Kobra
Flyers,
I'll run this scenario past the group and see what you all think and is if
Mr. McNicoll can shed some light as well.
First, some quick background. At my airport if you are IFR and are heading,
say, southwest (as I was) it's too bad...you're clearance is to send you 22
miles north to a...

What fixes do you use for flight planning? by
Paul Tomblin
I'm trying to improve my database generators for CoPilot and other
programs (see http://navaid.com/ and http://xcski.com/~ptomblin/CoPilot/
for details). The problem I'm trying to deal with is that the FAA is
totally inconsistent on how they name waypoints, DAFIF isn't any better,
and there are...

Who's Boss? by
Wyatt Emmerich[_2_]
I'm flying into my home base KHKS at night in a single engine airplane. At
no point have I been outside of glide range to an airport. I am VFR shooting
a practice full approach in Class C airspace going into a Class D airport.
The controller wants me to descend to 2,000 feet five miles before...

Finding IAPs by TYPE? by
[email protected]
Hello all... I was looking through the online instrument procedures, trying to
find a VOR/DME RNAV approach to do the flight test portion of my KNS-80 IFR
certification. They aren't that prevalent, and I'm in Virginia, but basically equally
close to WV, KY, TN, and NC, which spans a number of sets...

Garmin 530 VOR Approach Using GPS or VLOC by
Rich
I have a Garmin 530 and a KAP 140 autopilot in my 182. I was
practicing VOR approaches with the CDI on the 530 set to GPS. I
noticed that the autopilot would warn that it was about to disengage
when I reached the FAF. It does this consistently. If I put the CDI in
VLOC, the autopilot would not try...

Slow flight and Slips to Landing - Video by
[email protected]
Nice VFR day for flying and doing some landing work.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzaeqwn1GJ4
"Plane having" fun, just wanted to commit aviation and enjoy the
sensation of flight. Figure to practice some slips to landings and no
flap landings after slow flighting it in the practice area

Minimum rate of climb or descent by
Aaron Kahn
What type of checkride was it? I would have asked the inspector to identify
the regulation that was infracted, or identify how the action compromised
safety.
It's true the controllers have expectations (as mentioned by Joe) but I
don't think that in and of itself constitutes a bust. But, then...

Changes to Aircraft Approach Categories?! by
skyliner
I've been away from this newsgroup for quite some time, so forgive me if
this has already been covered.
The other day, one of my colleagues pointed out something I hadn't noticed
in the latest set of approach plates, which came out at the end of December.
Its on page A2, under "Aircraft Approach...

Grounded! by
Brian Whatcott
For those who managed to escape all notice that the paper FAA
certificates were being turned over to plastic cards, as publicized for
the last two years: your paper flying license is now kindling,
as from midnight last night!
Regards
Brian Whatcott with a brand new license to fly....

Standard Instrument Procedures...published in text form? by
Mark Astley
All,
I was once told that instrument procedures (i.e. approaches) are published
in text form, and then rendered into NOS charts (and a similar process for
Jeppesen).
1) Is this true?
2) If so, is this "raw" data available to the public somewhere? I'm looking
for something similar to the ATA-100...

2 pilot/small airplane CRM by
Mitty
Can anyone point me to web or print resources with discussion of how to
best utilize two pilots in small airplanes? Who does what, etc. I have
found lots of airline-level material but really nothing that relates to
flying light singles. Or maybe someone who regularly flies with a pilot
spouse? ...

Are "Popups" A Hassle? by
skym
For the ATC guys: I frequently have departed VFR, but then do a popup
if needed. Frequently these are sortof foreseeable possibilities, but
often enough I have been able to proceed VFR all the way. I've often
wondered just how much of a hassle it is to ATC to have to deal with a
popup.

Flight above the cloud deck to music - Video by
[email protected]
Today's 1.6 hour flight to the Northeast practice area compressed to 4
minutes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7CzHdoNw-E
Every IFR pilot should do this this type of flight at least one time
in their flying career.
I would still be flying had the clouds not evaporated :-)

ILS 16R at KRNO by
nick name
The ILS 16R (http://tinyurl.com/353gd5) at Reno (KRNO) has the
notation:
"8500 to GS intercept 181 (2) and LOC (8.8)"
I don't understand this. It appears this means that GS intercept will
occur in 2 miles on a 181 heading and that LOC intercept will occur in
8.8 miles. Neither appears to be true...

VOR approach- when to descend from the FAF by
Terence Wilson
When flying a VOR approach in which the FAF is defined by the VOR, is
it appropriate to start the descent to the MAP, or next stepdown,
immediately after overflying the VOR or should I wait until I have
positive course guidance for the final approach segment?
I ask because it can sometimes take...

Second Stage Climb Gradient? by
Bill
I was told by a co-worker that a new Part 91-mandatory compliance reg
has come out, requiring all airplanes to meet a min. climb gradient of
2.5% for second stage climb gradient, unless published otherwise. In
other words, if no specific gradient is published for XYZ airport,
then the airplane must...

transitioning from instruments to visual landing on final by
Gerald Sylvester
I'm about 14 hours into my IFR training with 11 of those on the sim.
I had to go to LAS for work (non-aviation) for 3 weeks. I came back
and was dying to go flying. Well I expected the worst. I hadn't
flown a plane in nearly 2 months since I was working on the IFR stuff.
First time flying...

Saturday morning! (8/16/03) The guys at work just don't understand and it's
hard to explain it to them, but I'm sure most of you know how I...
