Anyone know about a school called Silver State Helicopters?
They are advertising classes in my area and say they will give you a job
upon graduation. Problem I see is that...

First 2 1/2 hours PPL(H) today! by
Simon Robbins
Today I started an intensive PPL(H) course. (I'm going to fly three times a
week, two hours a day.)
I did an hours trial lesson last year in an R22 which I enjoyed immensely
and cemented my determination to learn to fly these bizarre contraptions.
Finally, nearly a year later I've got the...

PPL(H) hours 2.5 - 4.5 by
Simon Robbins
Well I finally got to go flying again today. It's been a week since my first
day at it and I've been dying to get up again. The weather was much the
same as last week, slightly blustery around 10 kts with good visibility and
temperature around 23 degrees C.
We started off in the first hour by...

PPL(H) hours 2.5 - 4.5 by
Simon Robbins
Don't know why but 5 minutes after I posted this Outlook told me it was no
longer on the server. So I'm reposting it. Apologies if Outlook lies and
it's up twice.

PPL(H) Hours 4.5 to 5.9 by
Simon Robbins
It's typical... as I look out my window right now, at 6PM there's a bright
blue, calm and cloudless autumn sky. Perfect flying weather. When I turned
up at the airport this morning it was raining, 8/8 cloudbase at 300 ft, with
about 1 mile horizontal visibility. No good. I was about to turn...

PPL(H) Hours 5.9 to 8.4 by
Simon Robbins
Well I'm going to try and do this a bit different. I just got home from the
airport and I'm determined to try and encapsulate my day's flying in writing
*before* I have a hot bath to relieve the aches and pains (and boy do I ache
today) or fall asleep and wipe my memory of the flights. Hopefully...

PPL(H) Hours 8.4 to 12.1 by
Simon Robbins
Well I didn't write anything last week because I had a really bad second
day's flying. Having done really well the day before side-slipping round a
hover square I think I went in to it with too much confidence. Early in the
second hour I came down a little too hard on concrete and instantly got...

PPL(H) scuppered for now! by
Simon Robbins
I know I've been a bit lax with my lesson reports lately. Unfortunately the
devil's ****ed on my cornflakes and I've acquired a rather nasty medical
condition that's going to take some work to get over, not to mention a large
amount of circus training in order to be able to jump through hoops the...

Helicopter superstitions and "old wives" tales? by
Simon Robbins
A few weeks ago on my last flight I kept having to put the collective lock
on and scratch my nose on the circuit approach. Could be nerves, but my
instructor noticed and commented "we'll have to get the tail rotor looked at
during the next service." When I queried that odd announcement, I was...

Helicycle Insurance by
sjmadden
Can you get liability insurance for the
Helicycle? If so, how much would it run in ballpark figures.
What do you do with your Helicycle. Do you fly over 100 miles in it or
do you just fly within a short area. I am interested in the
helicopter, but one seat and limited range make me think twice. ...

Ground 350 run without blades? by
Sla#s
Has anyone ever run a AS 350 or 355 without the Main rotor blades fitted?
We do it all the time with our 315 but I've never heard of it with a
Squirrel / A Star.
It would make tail rotor balancing a lot easier for a start - i.e. no pilot
needed. That's what we do with our Lama and use to do with...

Colin McRae AAIB Report? by
Sla#s[_2_]
Anybody any idea what's happened to the AAIB report on Colin McRae's
accident?
It doesn't normally take a year to get a report out. There is nothing on the
AAIB web site.

McRae's AS355 (350?) Lost drivebelt! by
Sla#s[_2_]
I am amazed that anyone could write such utter rubbish!
Don't newspapers check anything nowadays?
Apparently they can't find the "drivebelt" to the main rotor! A Squirrel
doesn't have one!*
And why haven't they noticed yet that it's an AS350 single not an AS355 Twin
Squirrel?
At least some of the...

Third "turbine" on top of large Mil helis? by
[email protected]
Hi, many of the large Mil helis have what looks like a third turbine
above, and slightly behind the two main turbines. What is it? All of
the specs for these helis say they have two turbines. I can see blades
in some photos, so it's obviously something like a turbine.
Thanks,...
