What caused the VSI and ALT bouce in the IMC? by
cpu
Yesterday I flew a cessna 172 in the hard IFR. When I penetrated
apparently a heavy cumulonimbus rain cloud area, the VSI and altimeter
started to oscillate and bounce +/- 250 FPM (ALT oscilated 200~300 ft
up and back). The rate of bounces was about 3 to 4 Hz (3 to 4 times
per second). It lasted...

Constant Angle Non-Precision Approaches (CANPA) by
John Bell
I noticed the thread about "Crossing a stepdown fix high" got quite a bit of
debate. One of the topics in much of the discussion centered on stabilized
approaches verses dive and drive.
I was initially a skeptic on using CANPA, but I have come to believe that it
is a better way of flying...

CAT II Minimums on a CAT I Approach by
Giwi
I've heard that some pilots have the authority to descend to CAT II
minimums (RA100) on CAT I intstrument approaches. If this is true,
then how is the CAT I approach altered? Is the DH simply lowered?
Seems like this would result in steeper approach angles to make it
work out right. Alternately...

RNAV vs IFR GPS by
PaulaJay1
Coming into CLE the other day the controller ask if I had RNAV and I said no,
that I was /G ,that is, IFR GPS. He said that it was the same and gave me
direct.....
Is it the same, should I have answered yes to his question? Of course I can
navigate direct but do I have "RNAV"?

Whistle for your frequency? by
-b-
Thumbing through a 1962 FLYING magazine, I came across an advertisement
for the all-new Motorola M-400 NAV/COM. Among other quaint features,
such as the 100KHz spacing, later upgradeable to 50KHz, and the COM
transmit frequency that automatically switches to 122.1 any time you
select a NAV...

Safety pilot in and out of IMC by
Paul Tomblin
I want to go fly some approaches (and a hold) on Sunday. I know from
experience that it's likely that the ceilings will be too high to do any
meaningful approaches in IMC, but high enough that I might be in IMC
during the vectors to the approach or at the hold. I figured I could take
along a...

Radio license required? by
Marty Ross
When I first learned the memory aid for required documents, it was "ARROW".
When I inquired why sometimes I saw "AROW", I remember being told that the
second "R" was dropped because while flying within the USA you don't need
the "Radio License".
I glanced through the FAR/AIM and couldn't quickly...

Outer Marker by
Barry
When doing an ILS approach, with the glideslope, is it a requirement to be
able to identify the outer marker or a substitute? FAR 91.175(k) lists the
outer marker as one of the "basic ground components" and gives the acceptable
substitutes, but doesn't explicitly say that it's required. The AIM...

First Time in IMC and vacuum problem by
Jon Kraus
I too had my first experience in IMC yesterday. I got my ticket last
summer too and have kept current but haven't had a chance to go solo. I
was going to go from Indianapolis Executive (TYQ) to Capitol City in
Lansing Michigan (LAN). The weather was 1000 OVR until 50 miles north of
TYQ and then it...

Realistic Instrument Training using MSFS 2004 by
[email protected]
Hi All,
I'm a longtime lurker here, but now I have a question I hope the group
can help me with. I am working toward my instrument rating (21 hours
so far), and want to use MSFS to practice (cheaply). I do fine with
holding a heading, but I find it very difficult to maintain an
altitude. The...

ADF Problem by
tony roberts
Hi
Today I was flying north and my ADF was tuned to an NDB.
The needle pointed at 330 degrees (or 11 O'clock) until I reached the
NDB, and then it swung until it pointed behind.
I dialed up the next NDB and it pointed at 330 again until passage.
And I dialed up another NDB - same indication - all...

C-172 down at HPN - 2 fatalities by
Tom Fleischman
A Cessna 172 crashed yesterday short of the approach end of RWY 16
killing the pilot and instructor aboard. No cause for the accident has
yet been established, but the weather was at or near minimums for the
ILS-16 approach at the time of the crash and and tracking the...

TRM Avionics -- Chillicothe OH (Ross County airport KRZT) by
Richard Kaplan
Has anyone used TRM Avionics in Chillicothe OH?
I am planning a major upgrade to my panel and they came in with a very
competitive bid. References from past customers would be helpful.

Garmin530 and MX20 by
O. Sami Saydjari
In an article at http://avionicswest.com/archive/shootout.htm#2003 about
Garmin 530 vs CNX-80, many of the pilots said that they would want a
combination of a Garmin 530 AND an MX20. I do not understand. Isn't
the Garmin 530 also an MFD capable of displaying multiple inputs, like
weather and...

"Direct when able" by
Mitchell Gossman
When instructed to fly a heading then "Direct XYZ when able", does a
controller expect a call when you are in fact able and will be turning
on course? Usually it is a trivial turn since the heading they give is
a good guess for direct course.
I've had conflicting experience. One time after being...

Filing IFR flight Plan in VMC by
Cyberfly via AviationKB.com
I have a question for the group. Im working on my IFR ticket, and will be
finished in about another 2-3 months, depending on how much I fly (Im renting.
so at $165/hr with instructor,, the $$$$ flow is very high right now) . I
was told by one of the "old guys" at the airport that if I wanted to...
