Finding nearest airport by
Matt Whiting
Does anyone know if a site that provides an "offline" version of the GPS
nearest airport function? I'd like to be able to enter a given city and
find the nearest aiports to that city.
A quick net search didn't turn up anything. Well, I did find a site to
use to locate the nearest Shell...

Cananian airspace by
Mike Rapoport
What type of airspace is the restricted airspace north of Vancouver Island.
Flightmap lists it as COMOX and says that it reaches from 18,000MSL to
Unlimited. It is big, about 165nm on the NS axis and 110nm EW. What are my
chances at getting cleared through it at FL240?
Thanks!

Different WAAS altitude readings by
Wyatt Emmerich
My Garmin 296 indicates 330 MSL at KHKS, which is correct. My Echo Flight
GPS indicates 140 MSL. Both are locked on to WAAS.
How can I have such a large discrepancy? Both units seem to be functioning
properly other than this.

Jeppesen Charts missing names? by
Louis L. Perley III
I was flying into KSNY (Sidney, NE) after shooting an approach into KAKO
(Akron, CO) and requested the VOR DME Rwy 12 approach. I told center that I
wanted to do the full approach complete with the DME arc, as I needed
practice with these (currently an instrument student). The controller
cleared me...

BDL GPS-6 sillyness. by

Homebrew E6-B for Palm published by
John Bell
I got around to programming some aviation functions into a programmable
calculator application that I use for Palm OS.
I will be the first to admit that there are better prebuilt applications. I
mention these and some of the reason why I wrote the program.
I have not spent as much time debugging...

Air safety priorities at the DOT and FAA by
JJ
The current "politically correct" priorities at the DOT and FAA. The FAA
is cutting safety positions and running off good qualified people every
day but our DOT chief is more worried about National Fag month. Think
about that the next time you are in the fog and clouds. Your Government
and tax...

I can finally read... by
Wizard of Draws
....something other than IFR oral related material.
Since the weather was crappy yesterday and scrapped the checkride, and today
and tomorrow were forecast to be more of the same, I drove to
Andrews-Murphy, NC (KRHP) to get the oral portion taken care of.
We talked for about 2 hours with most of...

WxWorx by
Wyatt Emmerich
After struggling with my EchoFlight Orbcom datalink, I gave up. Forty minute
nexrad data, when it worked at all, didn't help me much. Lo and behold, they
now have a Wxworx interface, which I just installed today. Within two
minutes I have all the weather data in the entire U.S. in high-res...

IFR Groundcourse: Which books by
Thomas Wimmer
Hello
I'm staying for some months in Mojave, and would like to use the
opportunity to get my instrument rating while in the US.
In order to prepare myself (for the written test as well as for the
whole ifr stuff generally), I would like to do some home-study before
travelling to the US.
What...

ILS question by
Chris Brooks
I am training in the maryland area. I was cleared for an ILS approach to
runway 27 at HGR the other day.
Here is a plate:
http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0406/05114I27.PDF
I was about 17 miles out at 5000 feet when I got cleared for the approach.
My question is, when can I descend to 4000 feet?
Anyone?

Vague DP by
Roy Smith
The DP out of LGA reads:
"DEPARTURE PROCEDU Rwy 4, climb to 600 before proceeding westbound.
Rwy 13, climb to 800 before proceeding westbound. Rwy 22, climb to 1400
before proceeding westbound. Rwy 31, climb to 1200 before proceeding
southbound."
It seems kind of vague to me. Is it implied...

Web based IFR flight tracker for worrywart spouses... what's good AND cheap? by
Mitchell Gossman
I want to help my worrywart wife with a subscription to one of those
web-based IFR flight tracker services. Free would nice, but as far as
I can tell, the free ones cover commercial flights and not GA. What's
a decent one that is cheap that works with GA? I don't want to spend a
meaningful amount...
