Why Pilots of America rocks... by Jay Honeck[_2_]
Below is what was published today on the moderated piloting group, "Pilots of America". As you may recall, this is the piloting group that Dudley Henriques, myself, and a host of others have switched to, now that the cross-posting trolls have emasculated this once-hallowed group. Over on P of...

A Google Groups alternative to rec.aviation.piloting? by Jim Logajan
I note that some people who wish to migrate to a more controlled aviation forum have a couple issues with the alternatives such as AOPA and POA. The first being that they appear U.S. centric. The second that the layout is actually a backward step in user friendliness. While it isn't as good as...

Lancair crash at SnF by Big John
AW&ST today had a small article that a Lancair piloted by Gerand Schkolnk crashed moments after takeoff during the Sun and Fun AirShow. He was director of Supersonic Technology Programs at Gulfstream. Anyone have any data on accident other than what AW&ST had? Big John

Setting altimeters with no radio by Mxsmanic
Since it is possible to fly without voice radio equipment, and given that (if I understand correctly) pilots are supposed to have their altimeters set correctly to a reference located not more than 100 miles from their position, how does an aircraft without a radio keep its altimeter properly set...

Los Angeles radio tower crash kills 2 by Paul Hirose
Yesterday morning a Cessna 182 hit the 760 foot (AGL) tower of 50 kilowatt AM radio station KFI in La Mirada, Calif. The married couple aboard the 182 were killed, and the tower came down. KFI was off the air about an hour. According to media reports, the plane took off from El Monte and...

Why Airplanes Fly - Voids Above A Planar Sheet by Le Chaud Lapin
Hi, The title of this post implies that I know why airplanes fly. I don't, not completely at least. But I do know that I have read a lot of "official" explanations that are just plain wrong. Before I begin my exposition about what keeps the plane afloat, I would like anyone who care to...

OT - Plasma TV question by Jay Honeck
I'm considering installing a big-screen plasma (or LCD) TV in our meeting room at the inn, for use during presentations, etc. An alternative (and, to me, more important) use of this equipment would be as "God's Own Flight Simulator" for visiting pilots and their families to use. I think it would...

McCain in '08 by Skylune
The Flyer: Last year you blocked AOPA President Phil Boyer’s nomination to the FAA Management Advisory Council, leaving GA pilots and aircraft owners without a voice on the council. Why did you do that? "Senator McCain: As head of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Mr. Boyer and I have...

Bullying desguised (badly) as precaution by AJ
I took my daughter to Linden Airport (that's in New Jersey). We stood with a small crowd at the fence on the shopping mall side as planes took off and landed. (This is where I got my interest in flying many years ago.) Presently a mall security truck drove up and the guard told us to disperse...

Things not to do while working on your private ticket... by Mike[_22_]
Taking off with your wife and daughter would have to be pretty high on the list: http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20080731X01135 The plane was a '59 145hp 172. DA would have been around 3,500. You can draw your own conclusions.

Almost saw someone crash by Viperdoc
Yesterday the weather was miserable. There were low ceilings and a line of strong thunderstorms that ran diagonally across the state. The preflight briefing and a look at the radar indicated that an early departure would get me to the destination ahead of the storms. I took my Baron (radar...

PSA: Don't be rude on the radio by buttman
I had two recent situations where other pilots thought they'd be cool by being condescending jackasses over the radio, which effected my ability to teach my student. The first time was when I was at a local uncontrolled field with one of my students to introduce solf-field takeoffs and landings....

What to do about North Korea...? by Jay Honeck
Uh oh: http://makeashorterlink.com/?I50915D5D The news is reporting that they've launched FOUR missiles now -- possibly one that can reach the U.S. mainland... I wonder what our Air Force guys in South Korea are doing right now... :-(

Radio Procedure - Runway ID by Casey Wilson
Not particularly germane to this discussion, but KIYK is a non-tower airport. I was up doing bumps and rounds, AKA touch-n-goes yesterday, and was dutifully calling out my various positions as any good airman in the pattern should do. Now, I was calling the runway as 02, like in "....33Xray,...

Gliders in the Grand Canyon by Mxsmanic
If there were no airspace restrictions, would it be possible/safe to fly gliders in the Grand Canyon? There's not much of a place to land in the canyon, of course, but I don't know if there are thermals or something (?) that would allow a glider to climb back up out of the canyon after...

when does a "remain clear" instruction end? by Arden Prinz

Why nitrogen? by Viperdoc[_5_]
The thread on brakes raised a question from the past- why nitrogen in the tires of big jets and heavies? Air is around 78% nitrogen anyway, and the coefficient of expansion of the remaining 20% that's oxygen can't make that much difference in volume. Why not just use dry air? I couldn't imagine...
