Recommendations for accelerated instrument training NYC area by [email protected]
I am a 300+ hour private pilot living and flying in the NYC area (specifically Caldwell NJ / Teterboro). I am interested in taking an accelerated instrument course and have been attracted to the PIC 10 day course and other similar 10 day courses. I already have about 10 hours of simulator time...

AF/D's and NOTAM by Andrew Sarangan
I am curious how many of you routinely consult the AF/D prior to every IFR flight. The reason is, a well known FAA inspector at a recent safety seminar commented that those little green books were not of much use anymore, and that most pilots simply don't use them. I was surprised, because I've...

Aircraft Designations Book - Holiday Pricing by David R Townend
As we did last year, AeroFile is celebrating the Holiday Season (and my Birthday) with a sale of sorts. From December 1 to December 24, 2003, when you order copy of "Military Aircraft Designations and Systems" we will pay your shipping. What a great Holiday gift. We still have some...

Tolerances - Published Minimum Altitudes by John[_17_]
If assigned IFR altitudes can be considered to have a tolerance of +/- 200 ft before you are "busted", what applies to published minimum altitudes other than DH and MDA on approach plates? Most people will say that you are not supposed to descend any amount below the DH/MDA altitudes. Does...

Oct 18 course reversal change by [email protected]
The FAA recognized that a mistake had been made in the recent revision to the AIM concerning course reversals; that the wording was in conflict with the 1994 legal interpretation on the issue. At last week's FAA/Industry Aeronautical Charting Forum the following language was adopted to replace the...

Approach Question by VOR-DME
Greetings, First off, please tell me if this is the right forum for newer-minted IR pilots to discuss approach questions? If so, have a look at this one : http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0808/00382G22.PDF GPS22, KSCH. I believe there is an error in the hold in lieu of PT, which cannot be both...

Going for my Multiengine rating by Kobra
Flyers, For absolutely no reason, except that I want it, I have been taking Multiengine lessons (including Multi-Instrument and Commercial). The flight school has a Piper Seneca I (PA34-200) circa 1973. It fly's like a flying Bulldozer on Codeine (sp?). It's a beast...really. The controls...

Military Airfield Procedures.. by Dan
Last night I took a quick trip to KYUM. On approach, the controller mentioned that the "arresting gear was up" on the runway I was to land on. Being unfamiliar with arresting gear and flying an Archer, I asked the controller specifically what that meant. He indicated that it consisted of a cable...

IFR through Florida - airways? by Peter R.
Due to a business meeting, I will be flying from NY to Miami, Florida in a few weeks. In looking over the en route charts, I see a lot of MOAs, restricted, and prohibited airspaces throughout Florida. Also, my destination is Kendall-Tamiami (KTMB), which is just southwest of Miami International...

Pirep: Garmin Pilot My-Cast by [email protected]
Thought this might help before you try it. After much frustration with my AnywhereMap XM weather downloads, I went looking for a new source of in-flight weather information. I have had it with the lack of reliablilty with the XM data downloads, and didn't want to break the bank, either, going...

IFR en-route charts on line? by Roy Smith
Is there anyplace where I can find IFR en-route charts on line? I know where to find SIAP's and sectionals, but I haven't seen en-routes anywhere.

timing holds by [email protected]
Roy Smith wrote: What does it mean when they say you start timing the outbound leg of a hold "over or abeam the VOR, whichever occurs later". I'm having a hard time envisioning a flight path which takes you both over and abeam the VOR. I can see either, but not both, so I don't understand...

Can US enroute charts be used in Canada? by Andrew Sarangan
Are the Canadian areas shown in the US enroute charts valid for IFR navigation? Unlike the VFR sectional charts, I don't see any warnings printed on the IFR enroute charts.

Garmin Data Cards by Brad Salai
Does anyone know the format of the data cards for the GNS 530? Our club is putting them in our small fleet, and we are considering buying extra data cards to make the updates easier. The Garmin price seems high. If these are standard cards, we may be able to do better elsewhere. Anyone have...

Transiting KCLE Class B by dutch
I have a fairly new Instrument Rating and need to fly my (non-turbo) Arrow from Chicago to Binghamton NY. The most efficient dry route appears to be V6 via Dryer, but that takes me right through the middle of the Cleveland Class B. Is this likely to be accepted as filed, or am I likely to get...

Passing out at high altitudes / the Greek ailrliner crash by [email protected]
I am not a pilot, and as much as my email address sounds like I am a doctor, I'm not... That said, I thought someone here might be able to help me out - they news reports talk about passing out within seconds at high altitudes. I understand the air is thinner / less O2. But if I go underwater,...

Honeywell KFC-225 autopilot - what could cause this failure? by Joerg
Hi Peter, The mpeg didn't play for me but just a few thoughts: Since they say they couldn't reproduce it on the ground, could this be a noise issue? Possible sources would be the radio, a transponder transmission, engine ignition, maybe a motor driven trim, fuel equalizer pump if you have one....
