Need a 2nd nav with GNS 430? by Paul Folbrecht
I am doing some preliminary planning of the panel for my RV-9A and wondering if a 2nd nav is really a necessity with a GNS 430 in the panel. Seems to me that flying IFR GPS, with mostly GPS approaches in the near future, I should not have much need for a 2nd VOR receiver to identify intersections...

NA as alternate...redux by Bob Gardner
Those who are interested in such arcana should look at the plates for Moline, Illinois. Four approaches...all noted as not authorized for use as an alternate. Hint: Don't file MLI as an alternate. Bob Gardner

Garmin 430W/530W first impressions by Viperdoc[_4_]
Rode back with my friend in his turbine Bonanza after the installation of a 530W/430W. We had a good chance to play with both boxes during the trip. As before, they are very intuitive and relatively easy to operate. The screen write rate is a lot faster than previously, and the plane position...

Emergency paperwork by Ron Garret
I declared my first ever emergency yesterday after encountering unexpected ice. I only accumulated about 1/4 inch so it wasn't that big a deal, but I lost my engine gauges (I fly an SR22), which included my OAT, so I went ahead and declared so I could descend below the MEA to shed the ice...

Cancelling IFR in Bravo airspace by Terence Wilson[_2_]
On a few occasions I have filed a departure procedure to a nearby intersection just to get on top (comments section reads "IFR to VFR on top"). After breaking out of the clouds and advising ATC of the bases and tops, I usually cancel IFR and proceed "own nav" with flight following. Which brings me...

Booze around airports by BarneyFife
Legalize and control Pot. The dumbest thing in the world is allowing LIQUOR at AIRPORTS but crucifying pot smokers I have been slammed drunk on tequila and high as a kite on pot during my brain dead youth IF? in an extreme life saving emergency situation in IFR in one of those stoned...

Hardest approach flown so far by Viperdoc[_4_]
Recently, on a long cross country from Portland, OR to Wisconsin, we stopped at Helena, MT for a gas and pit stop. Coming from the West with the winds calm, I chose the loc DME BC approach to runway 9. Even though it's the capitol (is it capital?) of the state, there is no radar...

MMU 5 DP lost comm question by Andrey Serbinenko
A question to IR pilots. Suppose we have the following situation: a flight departing from MMU rw 23, cleared as follows: "Morristown 5 dep, vectors to BIGGY, then V3, MAZIE, etc... 2000 feet, expect 4000 10 minutes after departure, dep freq, squawk etc..." Now, during climb-out via heading 210...

Identifying an intersection with options by Ben Jackson
The HIO ILS 22 has a hold at COUVE which is defined by the intersection of three things: the UBG 232, BTG 242 and the LOC. It's also the UBG 232 @ 21.7 DME. I was flying this in FS2002 in the 182RG, which only has 1 CDI on the panel, but it does have a DME you can remote to the second (invisible,...

Filed and flew IFR flight plan from CNC3 to CNY3. Checked the notams that the NAVCANADA website called up for the route and everything seemed fine. Checked with FSS - no additional notams Only once up in the air did ATC advise me of a NOTAM indicating VOR YEE U/S. The problem is that without an...

Stupid Americans! -- Stupid... Stupid... STUPID!!! __________-+__ihuvpe by john smith
The train was quite crowded, so the U. S. Marine walked its entire length looking for a seat, but the only seat left was taken by a well-dressed, middle-aged, French woman's poodle. The war-weary Marine asked, "Ma'am, may I have that seat?" The French woman just sniffed and said to no one in...

My First Time In Severe Turbulence (Long) by David B. Cole
Tuesday's forecast for my neck of NJ was for a high of 63, light rain, and 1500 overcast. The perfect day to get some actual IMC. My instructor and I had planned on going to Hartford, CT to fly the LDA Rwy 2 approach. However, by the time I made it to the airport the layers were mostly scattered...
