Production rates? by
Ed Byars
Congrats to SZD for making 5000 gliders. That's a bunch. How many years did
it take. What is their production rate and how does it compare with Western
European (German) factories? Must be a high percentage of training gliders?
Any military?
I have owned German gliders with serial numbers in the...

Need CO analyzer for motorglider tuning by
Eric Greenwell
The Schleicher factory uses a CO analyzer to tune the Wankel motor in
their self-launching gliders. I'd like to do it this way, as it gets a
good tuning more easily and quickly than the usual fiddling around with
the needle valves until everything is running right.
It requires a unit that can...

ILEC SN10 upgrade to "B" model by
Dave Nadler YO
A few folks have asked about upgrading their ILEC SN10
to the "B" model (with the high-resolution screen).
For customers in North America, my technician can do
this upgrade, but for customers elsewhere the SN10
should go back to the factory.
The price is 250 Euros plus return shipping and...

WARNING, ILLEGAL ACTIVITY by
Jeff Melin
This past week I received a response to one of my r.a.s.
classified ads, the respondent asked me to accept a
check for 10 times the item value and offered 150%
of the sale price of the item for me to launder the
money through my account and wire it to a third party.
Some quick research indicated...

Watch out for those pesky rodents by
OscarCVox
Took the canopy cover off in the hanger and there it was. A pile of chewed
paper on the seat. Flaming mice have got in again.
We now have to derig it and use a borescope to find if they have left anything
in inaccesable places.
When it last happened a few years ago on another glider we found one...

Time for End-of-Season Squawk Lists by
Dave Nadler YO
For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, putting the
toys away for the winter, its time to think about our
squawk lists...
Got some equipment not working perfectly ?
Perhaps now is a good time to get it serviced ?
Perhaps better than waiting for spring, then not being
ready for the start of the...

Drum dia and torque by
Bob Johnson
Reducing the drum size has more effect on torque than I realized. My
spreadsheet shows 953 lb-ft for 48", 242 lb-ft for 36" and only 85 lb-ft for
24".
What do you think?

Schleicher website now also in English by
Eric Greenwell
Schleicher, very belatedly, now offers an English choice on their web
site! While a few links still go to German pages, it is a good step
forward for us non-German speakers.
Check out the TN/LTA (tech notes) section, and the maintenance notes a
the bottom. There were a couple things there I was...

Missed anniversary (Damn!) by
[email protected]
Somehow the date of 11/11 has slipped by without my noting it, and
celebrating appropriately, that date marking three years since the
last time my foot stepped into a cockpit, also the last time my wallet
was totally empty.
HOWEVER, not being one too proud to celebrate later rather than...

Water, water, everywhere, but none for thirsty wings.... by
Chris OCallaghan
I was surprised that Karl's column in the November issue of soaring
hasn't generated any comment. To start the thread, I'll point out an
important fallacy in Karl's argument.
Karl suggests that water is unnecessary: a complicating factor in a
sport that only gives advantage if one pilot can...

Fancy Pants by
Nyal Williams
Looking for the info appearing here a couple of weeks ago about some
trousers designed for glider pilots. They had the pockets on sideways
and a lateral zipper in the crotch instead of a vertical one in a fly.
No search terms I though of would turn up this post.

Glad you were able to get a copy of George Moffat's book, however,
soon that will be his first soaring book as he has just completed the
manuscript of a second extensively revised version. It should be out
of the printer (hopefully) by the SSA Convention. George says it will
be a different book,...

For Sale - Demo Cambridge 302 and 302A by
Paul Remde
Hi,
I just received a batch of new Cambridge products and I really like the
small product improvements they've made. The cases of the new 302 and 302A
units are now painted with a textured black finish. The original design has
unpainted brushed aluminum finish cases. The black case will be...
