Mystery planes over Los Angeles this week by
doughelo
This week (July 10 & 11 2012) I've seen large unidentified vintage aircraft flying south from Pasadena towards downtown Los Angeles, 2 or 3 motor, low wing, and slab-sided. The first time there two of them, escorted by a number of single engine planes, and the next day just one unescorted. Does...

Lost comms after radar vector by
Mike Ciholas
I had a "discussion" with my instructor about lost comms in IMC after
a radar vector. To illustrate, consider this scenario (gratuitously
enhanced with specifics):
Depart BJC (Boulder, CO) for a flight to EVV (Evansville, IN). You
expect the flight to take 4:30. You depart at 1200Z. Once...

PRN133 ranging now useable for SoL, at non precision approach level by
macpacheco
Since PRN133 was set healthy for WAAS corrections, its ranging was
kept at NM (Not Monitored) level, preventing its use for safety of
life applications, however in the last few days, its ranging improved
to UDRE 50 meters, which allows it to contribute for non precision
approaches.
With this...

"Going for the Visual" by
O. Sami Saydjari
A while back, I was with an experienced pilot, IMC, descending to land
at my home airport. The airport is not in an environment where ATC will
give vectors to final. As we approached, ATC asked which approach we
wanted. He said that he was "going for the visual." The ceilings were
right at the...

Altimeter: Hot to cold = look out below?! by
[email protected]
It seems that based on the way the altimeter works, the pressure is directly proportional to the difference between the pressure set in the Kollsman Window, and the outside air pressure. So the greater this difference, the greater the altimeter's altitude reading.
When flying from a warmer area to...

Hold "as published"? by
John Clonts
Flying to Burnet, Texas (BMQ) the other day:
"Houston Center, 7nz request vectors-to-final Burnet GPS-01, or else request
direct JIBAJ for the GPS-19"
"7nz, you're number three, cleared direct Burnet, expect further clearance

AOPA Sells-Out California Pilots in Military Airspace Grab? by
Larry Dighera
Another attempted military airspace grab?
The USMC wants to convert the San Onofre High and Low MOAs, that lie
along the busy, aircraft-congested Pacific coastline, into a
Restricted Area: R-2503D. The USMC say they need 38% higher
Restricted Airspace to conduct live-fire artillery and aerial...

Where are VASIs located on a field ? by
[email protected]
Where are VASIs located on a field that doesn't have an ILS ? Is it a certain number of feet from end of runway ? Does it depend on runway length ? If you want to land on a short runway when is it safe to dip below VASI ? Must there be a certain number of hundreds of feet from the threshold...
