sounds of aviation navigation equipment as head on a scanner radio by
Dan Jacobson
I'm curious about two types of transmissions from aircrafts:
1. squawk transponder Mode-C Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) or whatever
2. ACARS
I know ACARS is around 131 Mkz usually, but what frequency is the SSR stuff?
What would they sound like on a scanner? Does ACARS sound indeed like

Practical IFR Question (for centre controllers) by
David Megginson
This weekend, I'm flying almost due south 340 nm from Ottawa to
Philadelphia, as I mentioned in a separate posting. Inevitably, the legs of
my planned flight zigzag around a track of 180 deg M, some slightly on the
east side, and some slightly on the west. Consider this part of the trip,
all on...

Down to minimum today by
W9MV
It's been just about a year since I had gotten my IFR ticket, and have over 250
hours since, about 25 hours in actual.
But, my personal minimums have been 1000 ft and 3 miles.
Today (Knoxville, TN) we had perfect conditions to safely fly in the soup. (NO
ICE) I got my instructor on board and we...

Sim time loggable? by
[email protected]
Hello all... I was thinking of helping a research group at my school by
volunteering in an experiment to test new ATC communication procedures. Supposedly, the
equipment is an i-GATE desktop simulator (PC-ATD) that is set up as a Cessna 172R. My
question is whether or not this time would be...

Flying for hire Q by
Stuart King
I own my airplane.
A friend needs to go somewhere, but is not a pilot.
He can legally use my aircraft without me in it if :
1. He hires an appropriately rated commercial pilot...and
2. Pays all "direct" operating costs for the flight (gas, oil, landing
fees)...and

Best Single Pilot IFR Plane by
Charles Talleyrand
There must be people on the newsgroup that fly single pilot
IFR on a regular basis. These people have a schedule to make
and would rather not miss that schedule unless necessary. These people
don't have the need to carry many passengers, but just themselves.
My question is for these people...

snow and icing by
Teacherjh
Ok, so it's snowing out. Presumably the water in the clouds is all frozen and
there should be no icing concerns. Under what circumstances am I wrong?

Attitude indicators by
R&A Kyle
A typical AI display is "inside out", ie the view is from inside the plane
looking out. Some (Russian) aircraft use the reverse display, ie a fixed
horizon and a moving airplane graphic. Does anyone know of work done to
measure the human factors benefits / penalties of these two approaches?
BTW...

pitot heat question by
K. Ari Krupnikov
Coming back from Mammoth this past Sunday and flying through a snow
cloud West of the Sierras, I had the Pitot freeze over. I realized it
was frozen when I tried to correct for altitude gained in turbulence
and the airspeed indication didn't increase even as I pushed the nose
down and could hear...

FAR 91.157 Operating in icing conditions by
O. Sami Saydjari
I KNOW this is a big can of worms, but I have a specific question
relating to sub-paragraphs b.1 and b.2 of this regulation regarinding
operating in icing conditions.
It says "...no pilot may fly--
(1) Under IFR into konwn or forecast moderate icing conditions; or
(2) Under VFR into known light or...

Supercooled Water - More on Icing by
O. Sami Saydjari
This question is a question on physcial phenomena, NOT on regulation (so
I am starting a new thread).
As I understand it, icing happens between +2C and -10C. Assuming this
is correct, I have three questions.
(a) Does that mean one is relatively safe if the surface temperature is
below -10C (and...

I'll be flying from Ottawa to Philadelphia next weekend for a week-long
conference, and would be grateful for hints and information from people
familiar with the U.S. portion of the route.
I couldn't find any preferred low-level routing in Canadian or U.S. sources

Don Brown column by

Haven't seen anyone comment on this yet (though maybe
I just missed the thread). In any case, Don Brown's column
this week on AVWeb is clearly based on the situation and
question that Chip Jones posted here in August.

Dual Transponders? by
Scott Aron Bloom
Ok, Im not talking about the commercial carriers. But why would a general
aviation plane have dual transponders? Why waste the panel space? So they
go
tits up that often in flight where its necessary?
