CFI-I Checkride stories? by
Jim
Anybody in the group have any CFI-I checkride stories/hints/advice that
they'd like to share? I'm working towards my CFII now.

What approaches are in a database? by
Ross
A few days ago I had a last minute change of destination and didn't check
the database (KLN 89B) of the rental A/C for the approaches at Waterloo
(CYKF) prior to departure. To my surprise, the db only had 1 approach (VOR)
for the airport against the 4 published approaches (VOR, NDB, LOC(BC)...

Chart subscriptions by
Dave Anderer
Any suggestions for a good internet-available, good service,
well-priced chart subscription service?
I've used vrotate.com for individual chart purchases. Good price and
service, but the site is - well - less than I might hope for. No
support for subscriptions (that is evidently done via...

looking for non-vector DP near New York by
Roy Smith
I'm learning the CNX-80 my club just installed. One of today's tasks
was to load and fly a DP to make sure I knew how that worked.
Unfortunately, at my home airport (White Plains), when you go to load
the Westchester One, you discover there are no DP's available in the
database. OK, we headed...

TIM'S ABCS by
epsalant
Once upon a time I used the pneumonic TIM'S ABCS to set up for an
approach. I have forgotten what everything stands for (I believe it
begins Tune, Identify, Markers...).
Does anyone remember the rest? And do you know what book it's from?
Thanks!
Evan

Standard Instrument Procedures...published in text form? by
Mark Astley
All,
I was once told that instrument procedures (i.e. approaches) are published
in text form, and then rendered into NOS charts (and a similar process for
Jeppesen).
1) Is this true?
2) If so, is this "raw" data available to the public somewhere? I'm looking
for something similar to the ATA-100...

Strange and/or really difficult approaches by
SeeAndAvoid
Howdy all,
Got into a discussion of the strangest and/or most difficult instrument
approach procedures with some friends recently. One guy used the
GUC ILS RWY6 as an example (rules: you do NOT have GPS, are /A direct HBU
from the NE, and CANNOT be vectored to the LOC due to radar coverage,...

Dreaded IPC by
Dan Luke
Ran into my CFII the other day in the FBO parking lot. I see him once
in a while around the airport, but I've flown with him only a couple of
times since I got the rating six years ago. After telling me one of his
corny jokes, he asked me how long it had been since I had an IPC. I
told him I'd...

VFR GPS by
Hankal
This is not just for controllers.

I file 172/U
Will I get more direct to commands.
I still fly VOR to VOR but sometimes I am out of range, but still get proceed
direct.

Nexrad versus on-board radar by
Wyatt Emmerich
Flying back from Atlanta to Jackson, my Echo Flight finally received its
downloaded Nexrad data. It showed me flying right in the middle of a big
blotch of red. I look outside the window. I'm in light 40 F light drizzle
with ceilings of about 6000 above a broken 2000 layer. I turn on...

Another Garmin 430 question by
Jim
I've been told that it is possible to load successive approaches in the
flight plan page but have been un able to either figure out how to do it or
find any info in the manual about it. For instance if I wanted to create a
flight plan to take off at one airport, fly to a second airport then...

WGS-84 countries? by
Bill
Where online can I find a list of countries meeting the WGS-84 GPS
standards?
Preferably from an "authoritative" source, such as FAA, AOPA, ALPA,
NASA, etc, and not from Cousin Vinnies online website
thanks

CAT II Minimums on a CAT I Approach by
Giwi
I've heard that some pilots have the authority to descend to CAT II
minimums (RA100) on CAT I intstrument approaches. If this is true,
then how is the CAT I approach altered? Is the DH simply lowered?
Seems like this would result in steeper approach angles to make it
work out right. Alternately...

Precession of 10 degrees in 10 minutes too much? by
Jay Moreland
I need to find out if there is an official maximum amount of precession
for a Directional Gyro. My aircraft precesses 10 degrees in 10 minutes
during mostly straight and level flight with only a few shallow banks.
One avionics tech told me that it depends on the gyro manufacturer as to
what is...

Wet, Bumpy, and Cold by
Andrew Gideon
Ha! I bet you thought that this was going to be some porn spam.
Well...perhaps not after the "Cold" bit grin.
I'd a very nice "getting feet wet" flight today. I was in the clouds for
roughly half the brief (two hour) (CDW-SWF-CDW) flight, I was in wet clouds
watching the thermostat drop, and...

TEC, can anyone use small words and explain this to me? by
Snowbird
OK, one thing I've never really understood is the point
of Tower Enroute Control. Maybe it doesn't apply much
here in the Midwest where there's space between TRACONs.
Can anyone explain this to me, using small words and speaking
slowly?
Specifically, when is this used, what is the benefit,...

LOC(BC) MDA: 287 ft AGL by
David Megginson
I've just noticed in the latest CAP (Canadian approach plates) that the MDA
for the LOC(BC) 25 approach at Ottawa/CYOW has been lowered from 800 ft (427
AGL) to 660 ft (287 AGL). I can see how it makes operational sense -- it is
the approach runway usually named in the ATIS (despite the fact that...

Scrubbed IRA checkride by
Dave Jacobowitz
I have no reason to make this post except that none of my
coworkers understand my disappointment.
I had to scrub my instrument checkride today because the
aircraft I train in went in for a 50-hr inspection (my
club's code-word for "oil change") and ended up with
the door sent out to be welded....
