IFR en-route charts on line? by
Roy Smith
Is there anyplace where I can find IFR en-route charts on line? I know
where to find SIAP's and sectionals, but I haven't seen en-routes
anywhere.

METAR cheat sheet by
M.E. Borner
I would like to print and laminate a cheat sheet or cue card that
described the generic format for a METAR and decoded the abbreviations.
It would be helpful to have it in a small clear format so that when I
needed the information I would pull it out of the map pocket for
review.
Has anyone...

FTP access to Terminal Procedures by
Doug Carter
The FAA, AOPA, Sporty's etc. have good "point and click" HTML (web
browser) interfaces to US Terminal procedures but don't seem to allow
FTP access.
Does anyone allow FTP access to the TPP's?
This would make it a bit easier to write a shell script that could
download and print TPP's for a list of...

Garmin 196 & obstacle database. by
max
Has anyone else noticed that the new v4.0 software for the Garmin 196
adds "support for Obstacle database"? Does anyone know what this means?
Sounds like a potentially valuable upgrade to part of my existing IFR
flight bag. Hmmm...

Requirement to fly Departure Procedures by
[email protected]
The word on the street seems to be that with a departure clearance
from an uncontrolled airfield of "cleared on course" any ODP would not
need to be flown in VMC. . However, I'm not sure how the FAR quote
below, which also applies to Class C and B airspace, supports that.
Clearly, an ODP is...

Italian VOR/DME Approach by
G Farris
Who can explain this approach to me - VOR + DME RWY 14 (LIEE)
http://www.vatita.net/download/planning/files/LIEE_ial.pdf
I flew as a passenger in an Alitalia MD80 the other day, and we apparently
flew this approach. As we made our left turn to final, I could see the PAPI
lights on RWY 14 - all...

IFR along Chicago lakefront by
paul kgyy
I raised a question about this a while back. V7 runs a little farther
offshore than I'm comfortable with in my single. I recently filed V7
from northern WI south to Gary, IN. When I got to Milwaukee, ATC
started to vector me, steering me much closer to land than the filed
route. I hadn't asked...

pc simulator with Garmin GPS? by
paul kgyy
Anybody know of a PC flight simulator that has full flight controls
combined with a GNS-430 or 530? I have Garmin's 430 simulator without
flight controls, and On Top with controls and a 1990 GPS unit that
doesn't have approach fixes in the database. It'd be nice to have both
in one package.

How not to play nice with a GPS by
Roy Smith
I had an interesting experience earlier today. I thought after all this
time I had the CNX-80 figured out, but I found a new way to screw things up.
I was on the POU GPS-24 (http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0508/00286VDG24.PDF),
full procedure, Kingston IAF. We were IFR, in and out of IMC. We had...

How many nonradar airports? by
Andrew Sarangan
I am curious to know how many airports exist where you have to fly a non-
radar instrument approach (ie feeder routes, IAF, procedure turn etc..). I
have come across a few in Colorado and New Mexico, but I have never
encountered one in other areas I have flown.

Training for my CFII - Got a couple questions by
BoDEAN
What is the best course of action I should take to get my CFII?
I am currently a CFI at a 141 school. My instrument skills are weak
(I only have 10 hours actual, 60 simulated) and rarely fly instruments
because all my students are primary.
I need to get my knowledge test done, and I want to get...

KRMN ILS 33- Interesting Approach by
Brad Z
http://www.naco.faa.gov/d-tpp/0405/09743IL33.PDF
I haven't come across an approach with two separate missed approach
procedures before. Is this even remotely common?
I think I'll add this to my instrument students' training regiment due to
some additional interesting features- teardrop course...

regaining night currency but not alone by
Teacherjh
Jack and Jill are both private pilots, neither is a CFI. Jack is out of night
currency, Jill is current.
Jack and Jill go flying at night under part 91, with Jack sitting in the left
seat (I know it doesn't matter) and manipulating the controls, while Jill acts
as PIC.
1) Can Jack log the time...

Legend for Jepp Charts by
CB
Anyone know where on the web I can get hold of the legend for the Jepp low
level enroute charts.
Unlike the NACO charts the Jepp charts don't have the legend on the charts.
Having used the NACO for the written, I wanted to evaluate the Jepps by
comparing them with the NACOs.
I have a couple of...

Excel formula for logbook by
Wizard of Draws
I have my logbook duplicated in Excel, but now that I've added my instrument
rating, it might be nice to have Excel keep track of my currency on
approaches. Maybe flag a cell as red or green depending upon my status...
Unfortunately I'm just barely competent with the program and don't have a
clue...

Preferred Routing by

I flew from Columbus OH to Detroit MI and back last night.
Detroit has Class B Airspace surrounding Wayne International, and I was

The aircraft and equipment was a C182/G.
There are no airways direct from the Columbus area, so I filed direct,

Garmin 480? by
Hankal
How difficult is it to master the Garmin 480? What instruction material comes
with the unit?
In one of the advertisements it states that you can program clearances into the
unit as fast as one can write them. I find this hard to believe, I use
shorthand to copy the clearance on my pad. C R A F...

Embarrasing Flight by

Yesterday a coworker and I decided to fly out to Lancaster PA to their
pilot shop because he wanted to look at purchasing a transceiver. This
was our first time flying together, but we did do the ATOP course at
Continental as a team. We decided that we would rent a plane from my
FBO and that we...

That's gotta be wrong by
Paul Tomblin
We had a local safety counsellor give us a seminar on GPS and he said
something that seems pretty ridiculous. I understand that when you're
using GPS, if you file an alternate, it has to have non-GPS approaches in
case GPS isn't working in the area or your own GPS unit is T/U. And he
wasn't...
