Reno Newspaper Defends Reporting on Glider Accident by SoarPoint
RENO NEWSPAPER DEFENDS REPORTING ON GLIDER ACCIDENT August 30, 2006 Reno, Nevada: A spokesperson at the Reno Daily Review & Journal Dispatch defended charges of plagiarism today, arguing that material gathered by one of that city's most respected newspapers was in the public domain and thus did...

Random thoughts 2 by Bill Daniels
Is it legal/possible/reasonable to install just Mode A transponder (No altitude reporting)? Whenever I hear "Traffic 12 O-clock 3 miles, altitude unknown" I look EVERYWHERE. ahead. Might this provoke more visual scanning by aircraft crews which could spot gliders without transponders in the...

Collision Avoidance and ATC by Bubba
In the US, ATC is only responsible for providing separation services between IFR aircraft, not IFR from VFR. They will call out VFR aircraft time permitting. A glider pilot with a transponder might have the false impression that someone is providing separation services for them. This could...

LS-4 to LS-4a conversion by Dan Peters
Our LS-4 (S/n 4093) was supposedly converted to an LS-4 in the 1980's. A logbook entry was made about the gear mod and the new bags put in. I was talking to another local pilot with an LS-4 and he says that the logbook entry isn't sufficient, that our S/N has to be on some list. Anyone know...

Tow pilot insurance requirement by [email protected]
We just received our renewal for our towplane insurance which had a new clause. They now require our pilot, who is 70 years old, to have a current, within one year, FAA physical when towing or flying our Scout. Do other insurance companies require this? Tom Dixon Idaho

Batteries, Solar Panels, Transponders, etc. by JS
Onward. It's time for serious discussion of Collision Avoidance Systems and techniques. There is no substitute for a good lookout. Don't install all this instrumentation and expect to be able to fly blind. These equipment-based topics come to mind immediately. Batteries. Solar panels.

Minden midair police report and photos by Overlap
Found this from someone claiming to be a Sheriff's deputy (and I have no reason to believe otherwise.) You have to hand it to the Hawker pilots, at least for getting the airplane on the ground with this kind of damage. ------ I am a Sheriff's Deputy in Carson City Nevada and on August 28 I...

Cloud Flying by Shawn Knickerbocker
Viewed the discussion on cloud flying. I have been cloud flying in sailplanes for over 15 yrs....IMC flying that is. Currently I have a Nimbus 3, modified to 26 M with an EFIS. Cloud flying is legal in the USA as long as you have a clearance in controlled airspace and the required equipment as per...

N.O.H. by Ian Cant
All the flight crews involved in the mid-air at Minden seem to have reacted well to the emergency. There is no evidence to suggest that either aircraft was contravening any regulations or being flown in any irresponsible way. We all know that gliders can be hard to see, and we all know that...
