Radio Procedure - Runway ID by
Casey Wilson
Not particularly germane to this discussion, but KIYK is a non-tower
airport. I was up doing bumps and rounds, AKA touch-n-goes yesterday, and
was dutifully calling out my various positions as any good airman in the
pattern should do.
Now, I was calling the runway as 02, like in "....33Xray,...

My airplane - NO MY airplane.... by

From today's edition of an electronic Aviation Newsletter (AvFlash):
Pilots Battle Computer For Control Of 777
Stanley Kubrick couldn't have scripted anything more eerie than the
real-life odyssey of a Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 that seemed hell-bent

Aviation headsets and NASCAR noise by
Casey Wilson
I have a couple aviation headsets (not active noise suppression) that I'm
thinking of taking to the NASCAR race in California in September. I can plug
my handheld scanner into the portable intercom, so that appears to make a
good package.
Although I've never been to one I've heard the track noise...

Question for Newps or McNicholl or other ATC Pro by
Casey Wilson
Hi,
Can you tell me or point me to a reference for how many ATC personnel
are on the active rolls? I'm hoping for a number that includes towers,
centers, and approach and departure -- the boys and girls that talk to us
pilots, admin and beauracracy excluded.
Thanks,
Casey Wilson

Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta by
Casey Wilson
Hi All,
I'm setting down some long range plans for attending the balloon gig in
Albuquerque in 2005. Date are, I think, September 30 through October 9. I
hope to fly over, weather permitting, and spend a few days gawking at the
event.
Questions:
With only four days to spare at the event, which...

Just another nice day over the Mojave by
Casey Wilson
WARNING! This post does not contain any political diatribe, personal
castigations, or off-topics musings.
The weather over the north end of California's share of the Mojave
Desert was once again in the severe clear category. A Mooney departed to the
south from Inyokern Airport (IYK) just as I...

Mythbusters and explosive decompression by
Casey Wilson
Hi all,
I don't know if it was a rerun and has been thoroughly done over here,
but last nights episode of The Mythbusters 'busted' the explosive
decompression myth surrounding bullet holes in aircraft.
The guys sealed up a junked out cabin, pressurized it, then fired 9mm
bullets through first the...

SpaceShipOne and XPrize by
Casey Wilson
Contrary to statements made by several media outlets, Burt Rutan, at
the post flight press conference, made it clear that the June 21, 2004,
flight of SpaceShipOne was NOT for the Ansari XPrize. Rutan said, "We had
planned that the next flight would be the first flight for the XPrize."
However,...

Question about aviation in China by

I tried various keywords on Google but couldn't come up with the answer
to my question.
Does a general aviation industry exist in mainland China? I'm planning
a vacation trip there in 2005 and, if it is possible, would like to arrange
for two or three hours of dual instruction in a...

Calibrating temperature probes by

Background first: Two significant points exist for calibrating a
temperature probe or thermometer without comparing it to a known probe or
thermometer -- freezing and boiling points of water. For the freezing
point, one mixes up a slush of ice and water, the probe should read zero
degrees...
