New (old) bird by Steven Barnes
Well my partners & I are officially broke, again. We picked up our 1966 Cherokee Six today. I got my checkout & gave 1 partner the beginning of his. Compared to our 180, it's huge! In a couple weeks we upgrade the panel. One thing that amazes me is the power off sink rate. In the 180, you'd...

Logbook in Review - Video by A Lieberma[_2_]
Just finished my first logbook and my first entry of my second logbook is today. It all started in 2001, hard to believe it's been seven years. I have compressed those seven SHORT years to 3 minutes, 1 second, a compilation of my accomplishments in the aviation...

Good Ol' Guv by Newps
The old rent vs buy decision..... His acts are not without an aviation parallel: Eliot's stupid harlot trick is what happens when one fails to properly make the rent/buy decision. Renting at $4500/hour might've looked good on paper compared to what he could get at home---his $151K...

Cessna 210 fuel drip by John Clonts
We have a 78 Centurion which has developed a fuel "drip" underneath, from some kind of drain tube protruding from under the fuselage on the left side, about 12-18" behind the nose wheel opening. I am trying to figure out what this line is coming from or is for. It is not the fuel strainer...

Cool new aircraft tool by [email protected]
Forgive the intrusion -- I hope I'm not out of line with a "new product" announcement. I just wanted to let everyone know about it. After years of changing the oil in his Cessna 182, my buddy and business partner invented a VERY cool gadget for airplane owners. It's also great for a ton of other...

Bose X vs. LightSPEED Zulu Review by [email protected]
For about three months I have owned both the Bose X headset and the new LightSPEED Zulu headset (actually, three of them). Because of this, I've been asked elsewhere a number of times for my impressions of the two, so I finally sat down to write it up. It is admittedly long, but I hope it helps a...

Cessna 210 power tables by John Clonts
We have a Cessna 210M with an IO-520L, which is rated for 285hp continuous, but 300hp for 5 minutes. The cruise power tables show "% BHP"-- is that percentage of 285, or 300? I would assume 285, but does anyone know for sure? Thanks! John Clonts Temple, Texas

FAA Proposes $130 Recurring Aircraft Registration Fee by Larry Dighera
As written, this NPRM would generate $31,000,000 every three years for the FAA, and you'd be paying it out: http://www.aopa.org/aircraft/articles/2008/080229registration.html Aircraft registration proposal* hints at cost-based user fees By AOPA ePublishing staff In an effort...

Speaking of tape... by Jay Honeck[_2_]
My fancy pants (a brand of wheel pant) have been done and re-done many times over the years, going from dzu quick-connectors to phillips screws, having fiberglass repairs, etc. The halves firmly screw together just fine, and they're strong as a bridge abutment, but the tight fit between the...

Teflon tape by [email protected]
My mechanic is getting ready to install new (hideously expensive) fuel valves in my Comanche and he indicated that he did not want to use teflon tape on the pipe fittings. Any ideas why teflon is undesirable for fuel applications? I thought that it was pretty inert. -ifsc

The end of the Annual Enema -or- The Fat Boy Flies Again by Denny
Well, Murphy finally decided to move on... The Kid decided to work on Saturday - after saying he would not be there, which got the evil eye from me... We assembled, and wiped, and polished, and tightened, and loosened and retightened... Finally after 4 hours it looked like an airplane again...The...

Post-Annual Flight by Jay Honeck[_2_]
We decided to move the annual inspection for Atlas -- our '74 Cherokee Pathfinder -- into February, since there has been little use for an airplane this winter. As a result of the weather and the annual (bless me Father, for I have sinned...) it had been 20 days since our last flight. I've...

Sporty's altimeter bug by Steven Barnes
When I had my 180, we bought one of those spinning altitude bugs for the altimeter. It sticks onto the face & has 3 pointers that track around the edge. You set the red pointer on your DH or MDA and you get 500' 200-100' callout reminders. Pretty nice for IFR flying. Well, I just ordered another...
