Warning: GPS data incorrect by
Cheetah236
Thought I'd better share this as others might be flying approaches
using the newest Jepp database for the Northstar M3 Approach GPS.
I downloaded the newest Northern Hemisphere database using Skybound USB
just prior to going for an Instrument Proficiency Check. The examiner
had me fly the GPS-B...

Missed approach (?) when glideslope fails by
Yossarian
You are on an ILS approach, DH 200'. The localizer-only MDA is 500'.
You are at 300' in IMC when the GS fails. Assuming you are timing the
approach, is it legal to climb to 500 and continue the approach?

Lycoming Carb Heat by
Mitty
Gents,
Though this is not strictly an IFR question, I am pretty sure that you have
opinions that I would like to get.
Subject is Lycoming O-360 engines. I have flown behind a number of them in
Pipers and the POH instruction on carb heat is always "as required."
Specifically there is no...

Odd clearance -- airway given twice by
Roy Smith
The stock clearance into HPN from the POU area is IGN V157 HAARP. It's
been that for as long as I've been flying around here. Recently, they've
started issuing IGN V157 VALRE V157 HAARP, which boils down to exactly the
same thing (VALRE is just a bend in V157).
Today, I asked the controller...

Which PC Flightplanning Software EFB Would You Recommend? by
FlyBean
Hello!
I will be getting a tablet PC (thinking about the Motion Computing
LE800), and will be buying a flightplanning software package for IFR
soon. I've been looking around at all the different options (Seattle
Avionics Voyager/GlassView), RMS FlightsoftPro/Vista, FlightPrep,
EverywhereMap, etc....

Warm spot for IFR finish-up by
Dave Reinhart
I'm looking for suggestions for a school to do an IFR finish-up course
in December or January. I live in Massachusetts and while I don't mind
flying actual IFR there's entirely too much ice in the clouds around
here that time of year. A break from the winter chill wouldn't be bad,
either.

FlightAware web site -- finally free flight tracking by
Chip Hermes
Finally, there's a free web site that does tracking of IFR flights and
maps and graphs and whatnot:
http://flightaware.com/
For IFR folks, you can enter airports that you're flying between and
get a list of IFR routes that people have flown, which makes flight
planning a lot easier.

GPS missed approach question by
xyzzy
You're supposed to go missed if you have a RAIM or GPS failure message.
But all the GPS IAP's I've seen have missed approaches that require
use of the GPS to fly correctly (fly to this waypoint, then go to this
other waypoint and hold). So what do you do? Use the GPS to fly the
missed despite the...

Approaches and takeoff mins. by
jamin3508
Today I awoke to find a cloud sitting on the ground bringing the vis down
to 1/16th of a mile. All the airlines here in KROC were forced to hold
from takeoff until it lifted a little. I know that the part 91 is 0/0
unless otherwise noted, what about part 131 or the airlines? Do they...

Localizer front/back course and reverse sensing by
Mark Hansen
During my instrument training, I learned that I would have "normal"
CDI sensing whether flying in the localizer front course or out the
back course.
However, At our local International airport (Sacramento, CA), one
of the runways (16R/34L) has an ILS on both 16R and 34L, although
the ILS for 34L...

How did he make this joint? by

Any idea how he got any strength to the joint? I don't think either
tube had any metal removed for fitting. - Mike

Radio Range Question by
Charles Wood
Hello All,
Hoping some experts/old timers might help me on a basic Radio Range
question.
I understand the principle of merging the A's and the N's to get the
on-beam signal.
I have been told that, while originally this merge created a
continuous, uninterrupted tone except for the station...

Standby Vacuum? by
Mitty
Our club is looking at upgrading a couple of airplanes to Garmin 430s, etc.
It seems to me that standby vacuum would be a good thing to add, too.
1) Good idea? Do these systems really work?
2) Recommendations on type/brand/model?
TIA

reviewing them. Here are the errors in case anyone is interested and
uses these charts...
