GPS Question by
rps
I thought I understood this, but maybe not. GPS systems were certified
for approaches after I got my instrument ticket, so my knowledge is
more anecdotal than from actual training.
Can an approach-certified GPS be used to substitute for NDB and DME
during an approach (or even en route)? What if...

Fast forward to the futu WAAS 200 minimums by
scott moore
Now that the WAAS minimums are going to be 200, same as
ILS, and the first WAAS approaches are going to be
overlaid over standard ILS approaches, the question
arises:
Which approach makes more sense to an ILS runway, use
of the ILS, or the WAAS?
Before you say "good ole ILS", consider: WAAS is...

Strategy for icing due to freezing rain by
Bob Gardner
Are you familiar with Skew-T diagrams? They show a continual track of
temperature and dewpoint versus altitude as reflected by the RAOB balloon.
Might be better than depending on rules of thumb. Just Google Skew-T and you
will get plenty of links.

Strategy for icing due to freezing rain by
Bill
The advice to climb is based on the
idea that it's warmer above, which is
an interesting theory. You could die
getting up to where it's warmer. You
should do an immediate 180 and get
out of there.
During your preflight wx brief, you need
to have your radar turned on HIGH to
any hint that there...

Strategy for icing due to freezing rain by
Doug
If you go into visible moisture below freezing you can get ice. I just
use the airmets. If there is an icing airmet where I want to fly, I
don't go.
The solution for ice is to turn on the deice equipment. If you don't
have it, you are pretty much screwed. Get out of it any way you can. If
you...

Now, the question is about freezing rain.
Speaking to instructors/examiners, the FAA oral/written position seems
to be that since there must be warmer air above, one should CLIMB.
That is not always the case.
I would...

Anyone had fuel tank air vent icing up? by
Ronnie
Years back, a local flight school had a Trinidad TB-20. The
owner of the flight school told me this story. A rental pilot
called him up during a flight and stated that his wings were collapsing.
The advice was to get the airplane on the ground as quickly as possible.
The cause was blockage of the...

Anyone had fuel tank air vent icing up? by
Bill
It's a problem in Bonanzas & Barons.
Heated fuel vents are an option on some Barons.
You can tell it's happening by noting the fuel gauges.
They go UP! The bladder sucks up from the tank and
deflects the outbound level sender when the vents are
blocked.
You need a plan to be on the ground.

Vents are not installed in the direct impact slipstream, so
ice is not usually a problem in a well designed system.

IFR currency by
Chris
I know the rules on IFR currency as far as the FAA certificate is concerned
but I have a scenario which my be worth a debate.
A pilot holds independently both a FAA/IR and a JAR/IR. The JAR IR is valid
for 12 months and must be revalidated in the three months preceding the
expiry of the rating,...

Military Airfield Procedures.. by

Last night I took a quick trip to KYUM. On approach, the controller
mentioned that the "arresting gear was up" on the runway I was to land
on. Being unfamiliar with arresting gear and flying an Archer, I asked
the controller specifically what that meant. He indicated that it
consisted of a cable...

GNS430 Without the IAF by
Jerry
Hello,
Here's a situation that keeps coming up: I'm coming home to SQL
and want to fly the GPS30
approach. Like many GPS approaches, this one looks like the letter
"L". The corner of the L
is AMEBY, and 5 miles later after that is the FAF, CUZUP.
AMEBY is not an IAF, but that doesn't stop...
