do I have an ADF problem ? by
Dave Jacobowitz
Hey... have been flying instrument practice in the Bay
Area for the past couple of months and have been flying
NDB approaches without any trouble, but yesterday I
was setup for the OAK NDB 27R and could not get the
station. Needle didn't point and could not get the
identifier.
Tuning the ADF to...

DME req'd on ILS (not ILS-DME) approach? by
Don Faulkner
Hi folks. I've got a bit of a puzzle here.
First off, I'm a student pilot, so maybe I haven't gotten to this yet.
Take a look at the ILS 18 plate for Springdale, AR (ASG):
http://myairplane.com/databases/approach/SouthCentral/ASG_ir18.pdf
First, note that the approach is "ILS RWY 18"

Displaced AFSS "controllers" heading for BIL and GRB by
Chip Jones
Well Newps,
The bids have come out for displaced Flight Service controllers to enter the
terminal ATC environment. Looks like KBIL is one of the places they will be
selecting into. I don't see a single ARTCC on the list, just ATC level 6,7
and 8 terminal facilities.
Good luck...

Disc. Wings Channel by
Darren Eccles
I know this may pertain to a private pilot question so I apoligize. The
Discovery Wings Channel had a show on following a female student through her
training for her private ticket. I had moved and was not able to follow the
show anymore, does anyone know if she got her ticket? Thanks. Oh, and...

Direct to intermediate approach fix? by
Roy Smith
Yesterday, we had filed /G (with a CNX-80). Our clearance was KPOU IGN
V157 HAARP -D- KHPN. Nothing out of the ordinary there.
HPN was using the ILS-16 (http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0612/00651I16.PDF) We
were on V157 somewhere north of VALRE when we got "fly heading 200 to
intercept, um, no,...

Direct To a waypoint in flightplan on Garmin 430 by
Andrew Gideon
On the Bendex/King gear on which I learned, it was easy to skip to another
way point on the flight plan. And this was very convenient, as it comes up
fairly often when IFR, at least for me. For example, I'll very often be
told "direct SBJ" when leaving CDW, only get "direct ..." to the...

Different WAAS altitude readings by
Wyatt Emmerich
My Garmin 296 indicates 330 MSL at KHKS, which is correct. My Echo Flight
GPS indicates 140 MSL. Both are locked on to WAAS.
How can I have such a large discrepancy? Both units seem to be functioning
properly other than this.

Did I violate an FAR? by
Anonymous coward #673
The other day I was under the hood with a safety pilot, but I was not
IFR current. I requested a "practice approach in VFR conditions" and
was cleared for an actual approach. I advised ATC that I just wanted a
practice approach and they said, "We have to put you in the system for
." So I...

Diamond DA-40 with G-1000 pirep by
C J Campbell
I got a demo flight in a Diamond DA-40 equipped with the Garmin G-1000 glass
cockpit this morning. We departed IFR from Tacoma Narrows and flew west for
some maneuvers. This plane was the second one out of the factory with the
G-1000. I had a difficult time maintaining my altitude; the altitude...

DFAFIF airport data problems? by
Mitty
I recently got a tablet PC, HP TC1100, and a little bluetooth GPS receiver to go
with it. Rode in the back seat of an Arrow this afternoon and played for a
couple of hours with the APIC software. Lots of warts on APIC, one of which was
missing airports. I'm in the Minneapolis area and just west...

Detroit: choice of IFR airports? by
Mike & Janet Larke
From what I've read Detroit area airports get pretty mixed reviews, some
pretty negative for g/a and general level of service & facilities. Can
anyone recommend the Detroit area airports to fly in to, and warn of the
ones to avoid? (With instrument approaches/ILS preferred.)---for
single-engine...

Desktop Application With WAAS LPV Approaches? by
Will[_2_]
Is there any desktop application that runs as a GUI under Windows that would
give me a database of the newer WAAS GPS approaches (e.g., LNAV + V, LPV,
etc)? I do NOT need currency on this. A one time snapshot that I could
update maybe once a year would be fine. I definitely do not want...

descent below minimums part 2 by
hsm
I appreciate eveyone's input. I sense that there is no clearcut answer.
The stepdown minimums are obviously there for a reason. On the other
hand, one would be allowed to fly a descent path of one owns choosing
when a visual approach clearance is issued.
The controller is often not aware if one is...

reaching PATER, in order to facilitate a...

Descent below MDA -- what would you do? by

What would you do in this situation? You're on the GPS-22 into Ellenville,
NY (http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0508/09390G22.PDF), planning to land
straight-in. Note the high MDA (1800 AGL). There's no weather reporting
at your destination, but several nearby airports are saying anywhere from
2-1/2 to...

Descending through a thin icing layer by
Wyatt Emmerich
Let's say you take off on a long cross country with no forecast of icing. By
the time you arrive at your destination, a 2,000-foot layer exist below you
with temps of 30 F. You are getting low on fuel. Is it legal to descend
through the thin layer even if you are in an airplane without known icing?
