DARPA calls for help in designing submersible aircraft by Charles Vincent
Vehicle would be used to secretly drop military teams along coastal locations -- Sharon Gaudin October 9, 2008 (Computerworld) It may sound like something out of a James Bond movie, but the U.S. military's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is putting out the call for researchers to come...

Oil Cooling by [email protected]
Dear Buglover, Yes. The idea of using #4 as a restrictor to increase either flow or pressure has merit. But I do NOT think the purpose was to improve oiling of the main bearings. As you know, the main bearings are the source of pressurized oil for the connecting rods, although not on...

Too Old? by Gezellig
Recently a 72 yo went blind in flight (stroke?) and safely landed in the drink in FL. Several comments were that age should be considered in keeping your PPL. I can see this makes sense /but/ it would prolly be illegal. Too old? If so, at what age do you place the cutoff?

How to Remove Piston from Cylinder by Paul Dow (Remove Caps in mail address)
A member of our EAA chapter has a cylinder from a Franklin 150 engine (off the engine.) The piston was pushed too far up and the top ring sprung out so it now overlaps the cylinder sleeve which locks the piston in place. Does anyone have a technique to get the piston out? Preferably while...

Lycoming O-233. Any News? by Tim Hickey
I am sure that many of you saw the Lycoming O-233 engine at Oshkosh 08. For those of you who did not, it appears to be a Lyc O-235 that has undergone a weight shedding process. It is supposed to be rated at 100 hp at 2400 rpm, but will produce 116 hp at 2700 rpm. At least that is what I remember....

To All: As promised, I've began posting drawings of primary glider(s). You will find them in PRIMARY_GLIDERS Group, in the FILES archive, in the Folder 'The Northrup Primary Glider.' So far I've only posted a few. The others will be posted as time -- and my medical condition -- permits. The...

51% Rule Top Ten List by Ron Wanttaja
Lot of stuff lately about revisions/modifications to the FAA's enforcement of the 51% rule. We don't really need it. Here are the Top Ten Ways an Inspector Knows that an Amateur Builder Constructed the Aircraft: 10. Bloodstains on plans seem to emphasize the middle digit 9. Builder knows how...

Kitplanes blog shuts down by Jim Logajan
That "experiment" didn't seem to find the lift its builders expected: http://www.kitplanesmag.blogspot.com/ Too bad - not sure if it was a lack of traffic (inadequate marketing) or simply too much of a drain of their finite time relative to what they thought they thought they were gaining.

Subaru 2.0L by oilsardine[_2_]
wouldn't that be a nice starting point for an aircraft engine? http://jalopnik.com/photogallery/subarudiesel/1003879266 A flat torque curve until 2500 RPM and about 90HP, seems perfect for a direct drive. One of the questions may be if the prop/hub will suffer by the string power pulses of the...

PRIMARY GLIDER DRAWINGS(2) by [email protected]
To All: I've started uploading drawings for the Northrup (*) primary glider, into the PRIMARY GLIDER Group on Yahoo. You will need a copy of DeltaCAD to view the drawings. A free but time-crippled copy of DeltaCAD is available from Midnight Software, the parent firm. Most of the drawings depict...

Primary Glider Recall by [email protected]
To All: As promised some days ago, I have been consolidating all of the computerized Primary Glider drawings I have. There's quite a bit of information dating from the late 1980's. It is on five computer systems and in several formats. Unfortunately, the most recent files (which are on memory...

PTI Paints from Aircraft Spruce by PPT33R
I just had a very bad experience with a can of PTI enamel "exclusively" from Aircraft Spruce. There was only enough propellant in the can to cover 1 square foot of surface. There is still a vast majority of the product in the can. This is absolutely horrible quality for the cost of these...

To All: If you have left a COMMENT for an article in my blog, the computer advises me of that fact by sending me an email. The email shows the first line or two of your comment then asks if I want to publish the comment, reject it or modify it, providing a button for each. If I'm busy I usually...
