chart heads-up by Jose
To get back into practice I fired up MSFS 2002 and grabbed a random (out of date) chart to fly. It was the Bangor BGR ILS 33 approach (amdt 10B 03079, regular NOAA chart). So I gave the chart a quick glance, set up the nav frequencies as listed in the chart, and went flying. It took a few...

Non-Reciprocal LOC & BC by Ron Rosenfeld
This was from another group. At KBOI, until the current release, the approach charts showed, for the ILS10R and LOC BC 28L approaches magnetic courses of 100° and 278° respectively. The JEPP charts were changed with the current release; but the NACO charts probably still show...

why is intercept altitude labeled "LOC only"? by Gary Drescher
In the NACO plate for ASH ILS 14, the GS intercept altitude (1800') is labeled "LOC only". How can a GS intercept altitude apply to the LOC approach and not to the ILS approach? Is this a charting error? http://www.naco.faa.gov/d-tpp/0610/05036I14.PDF --Gary

When LOC Only Note is Correct by Sam Spade
FAA Order 8260.19C, "Flight Procedures and Airspace," Paragraph 852(d) (1): (1) Fix altitudes established on ILS for LOC-only use should be coincident with the glide slope when possible. Where the fix altitude is not within feet of the glide slope, annotate it for LOC use as follows: MIN ALT...

LOC Note, How Many? by Sam Spade
Any LOC Only notes anyone finds on an NACO ILS chart where the G/S altitude is the same, please post them here. The one who posts the most gets a no-host, no expenses paid, trip to OKC to tour the approach procedure factory.

Piper hijacked in Mexico. Reason? Nuke Smuggling by ElmerFudd
So you say the Mexican border is no big deal? The new al-Qaida field commander in Afghanistan is calling for Muslims to leave the U.S. – particularly Washington and New York – in anticipation of a major terror attack to rival Sept. 11, according to an interview by a Pakistani journalist. Abu...

Flight Plan Equiment Codes? by Mitty
A friend just asked me what code to file with his KNS-80 RNAV. I told him that I thought it was /I but that I usually filed /A with a KNS-80 because I didn't want ATC to surprise me with an RNAV approach or some kind of weird RNAV routing. (I don't use a KNS-80 often enough to be really...

low Take Off - is this normal ?....... Please view Clip * by Hansi
http://www.jumpingpixels.com/riskyairways.html I'm about to begin Flight-school, and I'm always curious about Aviation-Clips. I have a serious question in regards to this "Take OFF" seen in this video. Is this low Take Off approach on purpose or Pilot Error, and would you consider this dangerous or...

Another Weird KLN94 Problem by gwengler
I had a bizarre problem on my KLN94. The display itself is totally fine (i.e. the moving map shows everything correctly, all pixels are OK); however, on almost all other text pages, there is information missing. For example, the groundspeed is not showing on the NAV page, or a frequency on an APT...

Glider transponder on? by Sam Spade
On August 28th, Hawker biz jet and a glider collided south of Reno, Nevada at 16,000 feet. Fortunately, everyone survived. The Hawker was IFR and flying a STAR into KRNO. Following is an excerpt from the NTSB's preliminary report (LAX06FA277A): "The glider was equipped with a panel mounted...

Questions about the FAA by IIHKTWIKNIWHPMOC
If you were to grade the FAA today 9/14/2006 what would you give it? Do you think the FAA should be privatized and self funding rather than a empire building tax whore? I give the FAA an overall grade of D 1. Technology Innovation F 2. Air Safety oversight D

Instrument rating prerequisites by [email protected]
Hi all. A quick question about getting the Instrument rating: you have to have 50 hours of cross-country pilot-in-command time, right? How is cross-country time defined for this purpose? I couldn't find anything in the FAR AIM that defines it. I guess maybe it is the same as the definition for the...

9/11 ATC operations by Everett M. Greene
I asked a question of this newsgroup a year or more ago about the 9/11 hijackings' impact on ATC personnel. Somebody gave a wise ass answer that this was classified. It now has been "declassified" and the Discovery Channel had a program about the very subject. The program answered my question...

Unusual Honeywell KLN94 aviation GPS failure - what could causethis? by Dave S
I have seen that indication when the antenna did not have a clear view of the sky. The installed aircraft was an EADS/Socata TB-9 with gull wing doors. Coming out of the pad, the pilot's door when up (as it was in the summer) would obscure much of the sky and not allow the GPS to get a...
