IFR GNS 430 with expired database by
Jose
I have been told that it is illegal to fly IFR in an aircraft that has
an operating IFR rated GNS 430, whose database is out of date, =even= if
it is placarded INOP, placed in the OFF position, and the airplane, even
without the 430, is otherwise legal for IFR.
True?

Another Botched use of runways by

Something missing on the missed? by

OK, am I missing something or is there something missing on this missed
approach procedure at Petaluma? What do you do when you get to the
VOR? Hover?

G430 Display/Numbers or Pictures? by
Mitty
The "Cheating the ILS" thread prompts my curiosity:
I fly with a single G430 and rarely use the map display. Almost
always I am set on the Nav1 "numbers" screen, which tells me pretty
much everything I need to know. I have talked to a number of
commercial pilots with lots of G430 experience,...

why is intercept altitude labeled "LOC only"? by
Gary Drescher
In the NACO plate for ASH ILS 14, the GS intercept altitude (1800') is
labeled "LOC only". How can a GS intercept altitude apply to the LOC
approach and not to the ILS approach? Is this a charting error?

Hardest approach flown so far by
Viperdoc[_4_]
Recently, on a long cross country from Portland, OR to Wisconsin, we stopped
at Helena, MT for a gas and pit stop.
Coming from the West with the winds calm, I chose the loc DME BC approach to
runway 9. Even though it's the capitol (is it capital?) of the state, there
is no radar...

Well, I flunked my medical, now what ? by
Scott Moore
Great, I flunked my medical.
Actually, this came close to happening 4 years ago. I tested bad on
blood sugar (I don't know if that means too high or too low). Last time,
I passed it after taking a new blood test after fasting. This time,
the (12 hour) fast didn't help. Last time, I got advised to...

Have we stopped teaching VOR skills? by
Roy Smith
I flew with somebody recently who just got their instrument rating a few
months ago, in a GPS-equipped airplane. His GPS and BAI skills were fine,
but when I suggested we fly one leg without the GPS, just using VORs and a
chart for en-route navigation, he said he had never done that in...

An odd clearance...can anyone explain? by
Andrew Gideon
Departing Lancaster the other day, I received an odd clearance. I was
cleared from the airport to the Lancaster VOR, then East Texas VOR...
It was that first leg (Lancaster Airport to Lancaster VOR) that confused me.
The VOR is on the field. I have little choice but to go past it as a
trundle...

Housekeeping chores by
Wizard of Draws
Enroute and in between approaches, they say if you aren't doing something,
you've forgotten something.
I've come across a few checklists on the web that include a few items to
check enroute, and I'd like to get a feel for what you folks here feel are
your best enroute "housekeeping chores".

Oct 18 course reversal change by
[email protected]
The FAA recognized that a mistake had been made in the recent revision
to the AIM concerning course reversals; that the wording was in conflict
with the 1994 legal interpretation on the issue.
At last week's FAA/Industry Aeronautical Charting Forum the following
language was adopted to replace the...

Best PDA or tablet soln for GPS & XM WX and gyro AI by

I decided awhile ago I'd like to get a PDA (preferred) or perhaps a small

After days of research I can't seem to find a single system that...

Why are non precision approaches not lined up? by
Greg Farris
The title just about says it - I've always wondered WHY many
non-precision approaches (not talking about LOC only here, but VOR,
VOR/DME, NDB etc) are not lined up with the runway heading. Sometimes it
looks as though the approach desginers have gone out of their way to
make sure the non-precision...

While we're talking about Garmin GPS by
Windecks
On an IFR proficiency flight with my partner the other day, we got into a
little debate about the best way to use the Garmin 430 for ATC position
reporting. He uses the cursor on the map page to point at an airport or
NAVAID, then reads out the distance and (reciprocal) bearing. I go to NRST,
and...
