Are birds IFR? by
Kevin Clarke
Here's a whacky question.
I just flew my 250NM IFR x-ctry. The last leg was IMC, bouncing along at
5000'. So the question I have is, do birds ever fly in the clouds?
There are many birds at my home airport (KFIT). I got enough stuff to
worry about during an IAP, I'd hate to get a bird strike...

Flair vs flare by
Bob Gardner
Please understand that I am a geezer, and getting crotchety in my old age.
I have Summit Aviation's CD-ROM that includes just about every piece of
paper issued by the FAA...regulations, AIM, PTS, ACs, etc etc etc. I have
searched this resource for two words: flair and flair. My Webster's Ninth
had...

The need for original documents, N-reg aircraft? by
Bob Moore
Peter wrote
There are various documents such as the cert of airworthiness, and
(for an N-reg in Europe) the FAA radio license, which some say need to
be carried in original.
The Radio License doesn't come from the FAA, it is isued by the FCC.

TIS and What could have been by
Chuck
Unnerveing thing happen to me today.
I have TIS displayed on the Garmin 430.
I was 15 or 20 miles north of Moraine (I73) in southern Ohio and
talking to Dayton Controller under Flight Following.
I'm at 4500 ft and landing at Moraine. I request (I'm in his air
space) the controller that I would...

Dumb, off topic and political by
Scott Moore
Ok, I admit to making all three of these mistakes, but:
On "meet the press" one of the guests suggested that
Senator McCain was considered the most likely candidate
for Republican Nominee for 2008.
Would McCain, the presdent be able to carry out his
"final solution" of user fees for general...

Planning HPN to SAF by
Tom Fleischman
I'm planning a trip for mid-May from WHite Plains, NY (KHPN) to Santa
Fe, NM (KSF). I'm wondering if anyone here has made a similar flight
and has any advice for me.
I will be single-pilot IFR, will be flying a Beech Debonair and am
planning to file for a TAS of 165kts at 10,000'. I've broken the...

How to get the most from VFR XC's for IFR requirements? by
gregg
Hi all,
I've begun my IFR taining and at the same time, racking up the cross
country hours required for the ticket.
I'm wondering what things I could do in these strictly VFR XC's that would
help me learn/gain insight or facility with the IFR world. So far I have:
1) My CFII suggested I plan...

First approach in actual by
Wizard of Draws
Today was the first time I've ever been established on approach, in actual.
A bit unnerving if I say so myself. Partly because it's been a month since
I've been able to fly.
We (another instrument pilot and I) started down into La Grange (KLGC) after
we were cleared for the approach and had to...

ATC says wrong position by
Greg Esres
When being vectored, and ATC says your 4 miles from X, I noticed
occasionally that they state the wrong X. They confuse the FAF with
the IF. For this reason, I tell students to never rely on ATC's
distance statements to make a descent.
How often do others see this?

Los Angeles to Chico by
Marty Ross
I'm looking to gain information about preferred routes, interesting/cheap
refueling stops or siteseeing opportunities, or any other pertinent
information (weather/notams/etc.) for my round-trip flight at the end of
this month (July 2003) from the Los Angeles area to Chico (northern
California). ...

KAP140 Autopilot Details by
News
I have a question about some nuances of the Bendix/King KAP 140 autopilot.
Since the ink is still wet on my IFR rating (actually I have not even gotten
the new one in the mail yet!) I am working on a personal "post checkride"
syllabus. Part of this self training is to fly different routes on an...

How long to keep VOR check records? by
Ross Oliver
So here's a question I had never thought of until getting my
instrument rating and owning an IFR-equipped aircraft: how long
should records of VOR checks be retained? Do they need to be
retained at all? Can the FAA come to me and ask, "Remember that
IFR flight to SLO you made 2 years ago? Show...

Yet more GPS substitution questions by
Peter Clark
Yet another GPS substitution question...
It's a given that you can't use GPS to shoot an approach labled "ADF
blah" unless it says "ADF or GPS blah", but how do the alternate
rules really work? The regs say that I have to have an approach that
I'm equipped for other than GPS at the alternate...

BAF LOC 23 by
Paul Tomblin
I'm trying to figure out the BAF ILS 23 localizer approach. The normal
LOC 23 approach has a MDA of 900, and the LOC 23/DME approach has a MDA of
700 feet. After the FAF, there is a step down fix at 2.7 DME with a
_1160_ before it. So does this mean that if you don't have DME, you can
descend to...
