"View Limiting Device" recommendations please by
[email protected]
I've been working on that elusive instrument rating for awhile now,
but I still haven't come up with a very good solution for my view
limiting device.
I need to wear glasses for reading (charts), but otherwise I see just
fine. I wear progressive lenses (for presbyopia) that vary from a
diopter of...

CFII oral exam guide questions? by
Robert M. Gary
Can anyone point me to an oral exam guide (internet preferred) for the
CFII? I see lots of stuff for IR but no one seems to publish anything
for the CFII specifically. Looking for specific questions on teaching
techniques.

GPS vs ADF by
Mortimer Schnerd, RN
I actually posted this in another aviation newsgroup in which I actively post
all the time but didn't get a reply... I assume because of the crash in
Manhattan got everybody's attention. That being said, I'm still hoping for some
insight from the more recently trained.

'Spin Doctor' Bill Kershner dies at 77
Pilot, flight instructor, and aviation author William K. Kershner, 77, died
January 8 in Sewanee, Tennessee, after a prolonged battle with cancer.
He soloed an Aeronca Defender from Clarksville, Tennessee's Outlaw Field - a
grass strip at the time - in 1945...

IFR Checkride WX Questions by
kevmor
So my IR checkride is approaching, and the thing I'm the most sketchy
on I think is the weather charts. I'm fine with TAF, METAR, and other
textual, but I guess it's because I can't find all the exact same
graphics on DUATS/DUAT that they use on the FAA exam (prognostic
charts, etc). Even...

KAUG Notam Question by
Ron Rosenfeld
KAUG AUGUSTA STATE
04/001 - WAAS LPV WAAS LNAV/VNAV OTS WIE UNTIL UFN
This Notam has been posted, well, since April.
No one seems to be sure of what it means.
Translating the abbreviations into English is easy enough. The Notam
basically states that the LPV and LNAV/VNAV approaches are out of...

How do controllers coordinate clearances through sectors? by
Robert M. Gary
I'm curious, how does one controller secure a direct clearance through
mulitple other controllers' areas? Sometimes it seems that after a
handoff the receiving controller doesn't know what your clearance is
(but certainly must have that area available for you).
As a typical example, I was flying...

Going for my Multiengine rating by
Kobra
Flyers,
For absolutely no reason, except that I want it, I have been taking
Multiengine lessons (including Multi-Instrument and Commercial). The flight
school has a Piper Seneca I (PA34-200) circa 1973.
It fly's like a flying Bulldozer on Codeine (sp?). It's a beast...really.
The controls...

Night flying times by
Stubby
There is confusion in regard to which "twilight" times are used to
define night flying. What would be wrong with a change to the FARs that
say something like "Flight occuring an hour after GPS-indicated sunset
time and an hour before GPS-indicated sunrise is defined as night
flying"? (The...

Taxi Clearance by
Ron Rosenfeld
I just noticed this today:
AIM 5-2-2. Taxi Clearance
Pilots on IFR flight plans should communicate with the control tower on the
appropriate ground control or clearance delivery frequency, prior to
starting engines, to receive engine start time, taxi and/or...

ADF in Europe by
Ron Rosenfeld
Are ADF's required outside of the United States?
I had a demo flight in a new Mooney Ovation2GX the other day. Quite a nice
airplane, by the way. Afterwards, looking at the price list, I noted an
ADF add-on for the Garmin G1000 panel as $15,500 (it's a Becker ADF, for
those who are interested;...

Which of these approaches is loggable? by
Paul Tomblin
1. Vectored for the VOR 27 at Oshkosh in pouring rain, broke out and saw
the runway after I got established but before I started my descent,
cancelled IFR to help the guy behind me, did a visual descent and landed
on the green dot.
2. Vectored for the ILS 24(?) at Muskegeon, descended on the glide...

Can ATC assign an airway if filed direct? by
Andrew Sarangan
If you file to a VOR direct, can ATC clear you along an airway
instead, and expect you to look up the airways? In other words, how
important is to carry an enroute chart if you don't plan on using
airways?

Reasoning behind course reversal by
Michael 182
What is the reasoning behind the required course reversal in many
approaches? It's hard to believe that I will be safer flying the racetrack
and then the approach to the runway than simply flying to the IAF and
proceeding inbound - especially with GPS guidance. I have no problem flying
the full...

I comply.Look at my GPS which is at 7060.

IR without actual IMC by

Anyone IR without having actually flown in IMC? My checkride is around the
corner and I've no actual IFR yet. I'm itching to experience it but the
damned weather isn't co-operating (seemed the same way with the PPL!).
