Will a laptop or other portable equipment receive and display Mode S radar info? by C. Osbourne
Recently I saw a Garmin G1000's (very cool) Mode S radar display, superimposed over the moving map display. They call it: "Mode-S transponders with Traffic Information Service (TIS)" We were in a class "B" area, and seeing all the traffic in the area superimposed over the sectional map was really...

Finally a little good news by John Harlow
http://www.cnn.com/2005/TRAVEL/03/30/aviation.accidents.ap/index.html "Private planes were also involved in fewer crashes last year. The accident rate fell from 6.77 per 100,000 flight hours to 6.22, the lowest recorded by the NTSB since it began keeping statistics in 1975. There were 1,715...

Alternate airports by Mike W.
OK I picked this topic after reading through the 'flying to hamvention'' thread. Being a non-instrument rated private pilot, not sure what constitutes a 'legal' alternate airport. If VFR, weather minimums must be met just to get there. If IFR, I assume there is visibility minimum (decision height?)...

A Beautiful Easter Flight by Jay Honeck
We wrapped up a quiet weekend at the hotel (holidays are usually slow in a college town, since no one is actually *from* here), and the weather couldn't have been better. Sunny skies, light winds, temps in the upper 50s, and expected to hit the 70s tomorrow. But where to go? We wanted to do an...

NASA form use for someone else's event by Andrew Gideon
I've become aware of an event that indicates certain decision-making failures. The parties involved were lucky, so there was not even an incident out of this. But that doesn't make the choices involved any less risky. Does it make sense to fill out a NASA form for this? There's no need...

Cell phone Emergency Use only by Robert M. Gary
I just got my new GSM phone (previously I had a TDMA phone). I noticed that in flight it said "Emergency Use Only" on the display. I was about 4,000 feet over SMF airport. -Robert

VLD and max altitude by Chris W
Can someone tell me if my thinking is correct here. First VLD is the speed where there is the least drag on the plane right? So it takes the least amount of power to maintain level flight at VLD, any slower or faster in level flight requires more power? Now suppose you are at an altitude where...

Anybody seen the 2005-2006 AOPA airport directory yet? by Mike W.
OK, back at the end of last year, I renewed my AOPA membership, and as a part of the deal they were to send out the new airport directories, when they were ready, as well as a cap and other tidbits (that little yellow scale thing, stickers and what-not). The hat and the other stuff I don't really...

Go around, NOW!! by Jim Burns
This past Sunday, while visiting Lawrenceville, GA (KLZU Class C just under the outer ATL Class B), traffic was landing and departing 25. The controller was busy, coordinating with Atlanta, handling clearance delivery, ground, and tower simultaneously. He was broadcasting on all...

Flight Check ride-along by [email protected]
I had the rare privilege last Tues of riding along with Flight Check as they inspected the new LDA (Localizer Directional Array) approaches at CLE (Cleveland, OH) Typically, we see a King Air from Detroit for periodic checks, where they just need to fly a few approaches. For this new installation...

Cedar Rapids to New Orleans by [email protected]
I'm currently in the Cedar Rapids, IA area and would like to move my plane from the New Orleans area up here. Any chance anyone might be going down there and I could hitch a ride with them? I'm a VFR pilot and I would hate to schedule a commercial flight 2 weeks in advance only to find that the...

Reamed out by Approach by Bob Chilcoat
Mea culpa: I was flying into OSU airport at Columbus, OH on Friday. I contacted Columbus approach at the appropriate time, was given a squawk, and continued on inbound for OSU. The controller tried to call traffic for "Archer 411" a couple of times, so I asked if he was calling "Archer 44511". ...

2 aircraft cleared onto the same runway at the same time by Tom Fleischman
